I have had my '02 MDX for 7 months with no problems until yesterday when I was on the freeway in 5th gear it seemed to slip out of gear, almost like it was in neutral with the RPMs revving to over 5k. It did that several times in 4th gear as well. Now it is seeming to almost lock up on me...scary!! It's like someone is putting on the brakes.
I called Acura's customer service number this morning and the rep said that my car had already had the 2nd gear diagnostic done in '04 and my car would no longer be covered by them for the recall. This doesn't make sense considering I'm thinking I'll need a full tranny replacement. (based on the way it's acting)
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!
Thanks in advance!! |

| Did you buy it from an Acura dealer and are all the service records available? Those two things really help you out with full reimbursement of a tranny replacement if you are out of warranty (I assume you are). It's a common problem with the 2001/2002 model years. Bring it in to the dealer who will diagnose it officially. Let the dealer know that you know it is a common problem and that Acura has been covering the complete cost of replacements. You may run into resistance if it has not been serviced at an Acura dealer or you can't prove it was serviced regularly. |

From all the accounts on this board, it seems that being very firm and demanding with the dealer (and asking for goodwill, etc.) can turn them around. The first answer is typically no.
Is there even an Acura dealer in Reno? Or just Honda?
That's a bummer for a new (to you) car. Good luck and welcome to mdx.org. |

Thank you all for your help!! To answer a few questions and to give ya'll an update!
It has 99,260K miles
I did not buy it from an Acura dealership (aka I no longer have a warranty on it)
There is NO dealer in Reno!! ugh! HOWEVER there is a dealer in Sac. (Neillo) who may be my saving grace!
I picked my car up today from my local mechanic where they flushed the tranny and said it definitively needs a new one. After freaking out for a moment, I decided to just call Neillo (my local dealer) and see what their take on it was. (Seeing that the Acura "customer service" rep was of absolutely no help.) I spoke with an EXTREMELY helpful service rep and am taking it in tomorrow a.m. for them to look at. I gave him my VIN number, mileage, etc. and he said to bring it in asap, and that it would be covered by the recall. So for now I'm going to take it in and hope for the best!!
Thank you again for you help! This site is great!! |

Lisa,
The "recall" was only to install an oil jet on functioning transmissions. There has never been a recall to replace transmissions. You have a tough road to hoe- The vehicle is high mileage, you're not the original owner, and there is no dealer loyalty built up after many years of service visits. You may get an offer of partial reimbursement, or maybe not. |

I agree with Shootist. IF Acura won't offer any reimbursement, then it is worth it to check out independent tranny shops. I believe the costs were $5K for a rebuilt tranny through Acura and approx $2500 for an independent shop to fix it. There are enough Acura tranny failures that a lot independent shops are also familiar with the Acura/Honda tranny. Good luck with it! |
