Starter on my 03 is starting to make an unusual noise. Of course I am out of warranty. Has anyone replaced it themselves? If so where did you get one and cost?

Thanks!

We also had to have the starter replaced in our '03 MDX. We were certain that the warranty was up but the dealer informed us that we were still covered. They replaced it in about an hour at no cost. I have a friend that is a service writer for an Atlanta area dealer and he said that the starter problem is pretty common for the MDX.

Red, what is the noise that you are hearing. I have some concerns too about my starter.

If the engine is cold, the starter makes a strange whine sound for about a second after the engine starts.

The whining noise that we heard sounded like a lose belt and only lasted a second or two. The starter is basically not backing off like it is supposed to.

Sounds like a Bendix problem.

One of the most common starter failure problems. The Bendix spring is what moves the starter motor armature in and out to engage the engine. When it fails, the starter doesn't disengage as it should.

Pianoman,

Thanx for that.

It's been about 4 months since we started hearing that noise. Is it too far gone. Do we need a new starter or is it fixable? Damn thing came off warranty a few weeks before this started.

I'm waiting for one of you guys to do it and post up how it went. :p

I looked in the FSM and it doesn't look too bad - remove battery and battery tray and remove and replace starter.

I've seen reman'd units ranging from $180 to $280. I'll probably get the cheaper one as San Diego climate doesn't pose many challenges to a starter.

I have the same problem with the starter on my 03 as well. Happens mostly when I first startup the X in the morning or if it has been sitting for long periods of time. Also notice that it tends to more likely to "screech" when the weather is colder out.

There are few treads in the GD area about this. The problem seems to be a lack of lubrication on the shaft/gears.

I plan to remove, clean and re lubricate mines but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Well I got fed up with the '03 starter noise and replaced it today.

It is a fairly basic job and took me about two hours from start to finish. Best to have the MDX cold. You are working around the coolant hoses and the starter gets heat from the block.

I removed the top engine cover, 4 screw, and the front fascia, just twist the fastener about 1/2 a turn, to make it easier to get to the front of the engine.

Remove the battery. Do you have your radio code handy? You'll need it later.

Remove the plastic liner. Remove the battery tray. It has 4 - 12mm bolts. The battery cables are attached by plastic cable holders. Pull the tab to slide it off.

The main power connector to the starter has a nut to remove. There is another cable that is just a clip.

There are simply two bolts, 14mm, holding the starter to the engine. The bottom bolt has a bracket attached and I just left it hanging.

Remove and pull the starter out through the top.

Reverse the process and you are done. I did get the starter in and connected then just set the battery in. After connecting the battery I started the MDX. Took off no problem. I decided to do this before the trouble of putting the battery tray back in and finding something was wrong and having to pull it all apart.

My old starter was dried out. I am not surprised it didn't retract like it should.

i had the starter noise issue as well for long time.
dealer and others said that the delayed disengagement is causing the noise. they were asking for 300 or was it 600 dollar.
since i saw no mechanical problem i didnt fix this.

and now some how its gone. :)
doesnt make noise anymore.

but who knows when it will come back.
it comes and goes time to time.
