I think the manual says to change the fluid at 45K or 3 years. Currently my MDX has only 16k. Any 2005 owners have changed the transmission fluid? Please advice.

Thanks!

I changed the fluid on my '06 at 15K. The VTM fluid was due to be changed, so I thought I'd hit the transmission as well. It was not the least bit dark in colour, thankfully.

I have an 05 currently at 28k miles , the 30k service doesnt say that we need to replace transmission fluid, but the dealer has it on their list. I think Iam going to stick to the factory recommendation and then change it at 45k or 3 yrs which ever occurs first. 30k service is too expensive. Iam planning to pay only upto 350$. Pohanka quoted me 600, and another dealer in DE quoted 480$.

Thanks! I bought my 05MDX in 2004 and it will be 3 years in Oct. with less than 20k. Should I change the tranny fluid or check the color and the smell of the fluid first? If I don't get it changed, am I going to have a problem if there is tranny problem a few years later? I had my VTM replaced by myself and it was easy. Should I do the tranny fluid by myself or leave it for the dealer, so they have a record in the service histrory.

Do them yourself. Get the fluid from the dealer, along with new crush washers. No need to go to a dealer for this type of maintenance, IMHO. spend the money you save on a shop manual and then save even more doing your own routine maintenance life cabin filter replacement. Good luck!

tranny filter is so easy I do mine every-other oil change. I have an '03 so consider the change an insurance policy. Keeps relatively clean fluid in the tranny at all times. Keep you own records and receipts and you'll be OK.

Shouda said tranny "FLUID." Sorry 'bout that.

Where is the tranny filter on the '03?

The manual says 2.9 quarts for the tranny fluid 1x change. Can any 2005 owners confirm that? It has been almost 3 years since we bought the car and the fluid looks brownish althought it only has 16k miles on it. By the way, I couldn't find a post with pics and detailed instructions, can someone help?

One more question- Is it necessary to drive around a few blocks before draining the transmission fluid?

Thanks!

The first drain, no. You just need the engine at operating temperature (radiator fan kicks in). If you are doing a 3x, you will need to drive around and go through all of the gears after each fill. Good luck!

Thanks! So it is not right if I drain the fluid when the car has been parked for a few days? I thought it is only necessary to warm up the car when you do an engine oil change.

I'm just telling you what the manual states and what I did. Probably not a big deal either way.

Finally the local Honda dealer broke loose my tranmission drain plug and 3.5 quarts came out with some metal shavings on the plug. It is kind of hard to get the actual reading from the dip stick, so I decided to put in 3.1 quarts for now and observe it. Can some one tell me why the manual says 2.9 quarts to put in, but 3.5 quarts came out? Does this mean factory overfilled it? Before I drained it, I did ckecked the dip stick reading and it was higher than the max mark...

Thanks!

Can you let me know what capacity of tranny fluid you guys drained out and put in when you did your first fluid change?

I know this is an old thread, but I pulled it up because I did my transmission service today.

I drained out about 3.2 qts (the dipstick showed slightly over full before the change).

I put in 3 qts, based on the stated capacity of 2.9 qts. I then checked it after I had driven it a few miles and it shows that it is at the lower mark on the tranny dipstick.

So I am also curious why the discrepancy is there on the transmission fluid capacity.
