Hi all,

tonight, some bast*rd took one of the rear license plate screw off my new-ish '06 MDX. i had to grab one from the front to temporarily replace the one in the back to keep the plate upright. is there a theft-deterrent type of plate screw that i can buy or order that'll fit the threading of the screws that came with the car? i'm sure there's a kind of screw that requires a hex key or something, but i don't want to buy the wrong kind and have it too long or start to rust, etc. thanks in advance!

MDX4Evah,

Hard luck. The fasteners for the license plate can accept almost any type of screw. I replaced the dealer license plate frames and cheap dealer screws when I first bought my MDX. I used 10 mm stainless steel bolts. You can buy them at any hardware store. If someone is desperate enough to steal them, I can always get more. Good luck.:29:

Now that is one of the strangest thefts that I have ever read about. There are screws made that can only be screwed on. The problem with that is you could not remove them.

I would not worry about this being a continuing problem. There are not many thieves out there that just want a screw.

hi Excalibur,

thanks for the reply. i haven't really looked, but can i use a nut/bolt type of fastener on the back? i thought i couldn't, because the screws screw into the plastic plate holder only, and there's no way to anchor a nut from that configuration? sorry for the newbie questions!

MDX4Evah,

You only have those two nylon fasteners going into the sheet metal of the tailgate with which to attach the license plate screws. It would be better to get yourself a good supply of 10 mm stainless steel bolts to hold the license plate. Keep a few spares in your glove box in case the same thief liberates them from your MDX again. It's not a big thing to replace them, and hopefully should not happen often.

There are a couple of types of screw heads you could get that would be tougher to take. One is a torx head, one maybe an allen head, and the other is either a torx head or allen head with a safety pin in the middle. This last one can only be removed with a specific type torx or allen bit with a hole in the end of them for the safety pin.
