I have an 02 with the original dvd. Of course, the dvd map and POI are not updated with all cities in California. I was contemplating on buying an upgrade dvd or a new portable navi.
Also, the 02 navi's route recalculation function is a bit slow. Does anyone know if the new dvd disc speeds this up? If not, I'm buying a portable navi. |

I doubt the speed will increase with new DVD as this would be hardware related. If there is a need for an updated DVD for the convenient and overall function I think the $185 updated DVD map will be your best choice. It'll be funny to drive a car with a builtin Nav and a portable Nav. |

| How often does Acura put out an updated NAV disc? Is it an annual affair, or only 'when announced'? |

If Acura still uses Alpine Nav software then the norm is 3 update within 5 years. At least this is what your $395 will get you.
For $395 you will received 3 updated Nav disc for 5 years. |

It's $185 per disc, and they come out just about every year in the fall.
Visit www.acuranavi.com to order one. |

I think spending $185 is outrageous! I have an Eclipse Nav that I bought back in 2004 for my truck. My mother in law then bought a Toyota Highlander in 2006 which uses the same brand, Eclipse, but with an updated DVD. I took her DVD, copied it, and it worked perfectly in my Nav.
I don't know about you guys, but that seemed like a better way to go rather than spend $250 for the upgraded DVD at the time. |

I just sent for the current Alpine/Acura update for my 2002 and paid the $185 to have an integrated nav system (having both would be really dumb IMO). The update is the third released since I last updated 3 years ago and I only did it now because I'm driving cross-country next week and many of the areas I'm going to were not covered on my older update but have since been added.
You don't need to update unless you need the coverage for the area you live and/or plan to visit... |

That original disc in the 02 had very poor coverage. The upgrade will be a big improvement even if all cities are not covered. You will find most roads/streets on the upgrade but some may be "unverified".
When I upgraded mine in 04 from the original disc the additional areas covered was considerable but with the upgrade the recalc feature will slow down slightly, not speed up. Because of the limited coverage on the old disc that first upgrade was worth the money spend IMO. |

Well of course that's the better/cheaper way to go, but it's also the illegal way. Like copying any software, there are limitations as to what you can and can't do with it. |

We have a loaner 2007 TL while the 2003 MDX has its transmission replaced.
It has some nice software features, like a button to add a nav point to the address book, summary of routing choices, find POI within range of route, etc.
Seem like for $200 we don't get these enhancements, just a new database...
I would be more willing to pay for an upgrade if it included new features, but I don't understand why it costs more to license the database use than it costs to buy a new piece of hardware that includes the same license! |

I'm inclined toward going with the illegal way.
I don't think it's fair that Acura (or Navtech) charged us for incomplete map coverage. They should allow original owners to have updates for free until after they have completed their map. |

I would never recommend or condone illegally copying the DVD from the TL while it is in your possesion, but that is always a possibility for the not so legit :D
Does anyone know if the Acura DVD would work in an Accord? I have to assume they are the same units, the Accord is a late 06 or early 07 |
