Wasnt sure where to post, so forgive me if I'm in the wrong forum.
Trying to keep the story short.
I bought a 2002 Acura MDX Base model yesterday (6/16/07) and made a 5 1/2 hour trip home with absolutely no problems. Got home then decided to take the new to me MDX to go get a gallon of milk for my kiddos. While driving, getting up to 15-20mph the MDX makes a shudder and a weird noise while seemingly hesitating, then kicks in gear and goes. Then immediately after that horrific moment, my check engine light goes on! So here I am, same day of purchase and I already have a CEL! So onto google. Lo and behold, I find MDX's have a history of bad transmissions. So I read nightmare after nightmare of consumer reviews of my year.
Okay, I bought this MDX as a "as is" no warranty vehicle at a small dealership. The vehicle has 85k on the odo and has a clear carfax. I know I can't go to the dealer where I bought it at, I signed the waiver. So my next stop would be to call Acura Care Customer service? Does anyone honestly think I have a chance to cash in on the recall of the bad transmission??? If anyone has any helpful advice as of what to say to them or what to do, will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome aboard, sorry you're having tranny problems. You can try asking Acura Customer to cover it, but since you bought it used and not from an Acura dealer I think you'll be SOL.
Not sure why you signed a warranty waiver, never heard of that one before? |

| Sorry, wasn't specific. It was a notice saying I was buying a vehicle "as is" with no warranty. Either way, I know when buying a used vehicle I was running the risk, even more not buying it from an actual Acura dealer. Anyway, I'll call tomorrow to find out what are my options. Thanks for any help given. |

| I suggest that you take it to the dealer. I think it may still be under warranty, as those trannys had a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty extension. |

That would be great, do you have any documentation to support this? |

| Is that true about the "recall" transmissions have 100k mile warranty???? |

I had a letter stating this for my 02 TL, and I believe the MDXs of this vintage also had same. Check in the problem section on this site. |

Unless there's something new that came out, the 01 and 02 MDX transmission warranty has not been extended. The EGR valve, odometer and front strut warranties have been extended under certain conditions. Remanufactured trannies do sometimes have warranties but there have been some posts about this not being consistent so you have to be careful about the fine print. |

| Well, at this point I'm looking into rebuilding my existing transmission. I am talking to 2 local transmission specialists at this moment. I just hope I'm doing the right decision on either rebuilding mine or getting a used one. Then I thought, if I buy a used one it will be the same defective tranny? So who knows. I'll keep u all updated. |

There was no discernable pattern with the 2001/2002 tranny failures. Some people who babied their MDXs and had coolers but never towed still had failures while others towed a lot and didn't have failures. There were also quite a few remanufactured replacement failures, meaning that the replacement was just as likely to fail as the original one because the actual fix was a complete tranny redesign incorporated in 2003. The interesting thing is that the 2001/2002 MDX tranny was also used in the Honda Pilot up until 2005 and the Pilot failure rate was extremely small. |

So how does someone come about purchasing a used remanufactured 2003 transmission? Since those had a significantly less failure rate. I'm still looking to rebuild mine and I'm also going to incorporate a oil cooler.
Another question? What sensor would cause the transmission to "slip" or feel like the shift points are off? EGR Valve???
Thanks! |

The 2003 tranny was significantly redesigned and also added throttle by wire. I don't think you are going to successfully replace your 2002 tranny with a 2003. If that would work, then I believe that Acura would have been doing that from the start. |

Incorrect, I never received any notice, just a EGR extension. |

Huh??? I'm not quite sure I get what you're tryingg to say. Disck pastas sound delicious but I don't think they belong on a car, and neither does a sprak. Spark plugs maybe? |

Okay, its been awhile since my last post, but I have been dealing w/Acura Customer Care and w/an Acura Dealer about my problem. The result is this. Acura will pay half for a replacement tranny! This is great news for me. I was quoted locally anywere from $1500-$2500 for a tranny rebuild. Now my estimated cost is $1500 w/Acura and a 3yr/36k mile warranty. This is after I bought my Acura from a non-acura dealer. I was just persistent and stated my case as a product issue. After 1 week of calls. Acura agreed to pay half. So now my MDX is in the shop for surgery! I'm pretty excited. Anyway, I'll update you all later on the prognosis.

Drian:
Please give me a followup. I just bought an 01 MDX from a non-Acura dealership with "as is" warranty as well. It has 93,000 miles and the previous owner footed the bill for a transmission at 85,000 miles. PM or email me the specifics so I can be prepared in the event mine craps out. I found out about these transmissions after the purchase like you. I'm glad they worked with you so there is hope if it happens to me. |

I have not gone over all the posts, but why are they not paying for it all?? Are you over the 100,000 mile mark, or was their poor service on your vehicle? |

Okay, I'll try to to be clear on my situation.
I purchased a used 02 MDX from a small dealer. One owner and no warranty. It has a clean carfax and it was in great working condition when I drove it off. When I got home that same day, I went to go get some milk, then bam the tranny started to act up and the cel came on. So...I did research. Took my mdx to 4diff transmission specialists. All 4 said needs a new tranny. So I called the dealer and found out they bought it from an auction. Then I called Gunn Acura, turns out my vehicle was a regular there for maintenance. I talked to the Service manager and explained my situation. He then directed me to Acura Customer Care. I called Acura and explained my situation. They basically said I was out of warranty and good luck. Then I called back Gunn Acura and he gave me ammo. He turned out to be a critical advocate for me. I then called back Acura Customer Care and stated my case firmly and wasnt too pleased by thier way of handling me and basically said Acura is supposed to be high quality blah blah blah.
Here are some tips:
Tell them Acura is the best of the best.
Let them know you owned other model Acuras. (I owned 3 others)
Explain to them that you are a loyal customer and they should be loyal to you.
So, they opened a case. Called the service manager at Gunn Acura and he basically said it needs a new tranny and it has been regulary serviced. Acura called me back and said they will only pay half since I didnt buy it from an Acura dealer and that it has a good maintenance history. So all in all, I'm pretty darn content w/that. I have a new tranny w/a 3yr/36k warranty.
Any other questions????
Good luck! |

| I too just bought a pre-owned 2001 MDX last month with about 89K on it. I recently brought it in to a reputable, Honda/Acura authorized repair shop for the 90K service. (Hondaar House in Somerville, MA what up) They stated nothing goes wrong with the the 2001 MDXs except for the transmissions which if there were any problems with mine, I'd get a new one for free because the warranty is extended for 10yrs or 100k. I'm suprised to hear you had to pay. What are the symptoms of it going bad? |

I'd suggest you get this in writing from them and if in the next 10K you tranny does go south see how "reputable" they are with giving you a free tranny :)
Honda/Acura never extended tranny warranties on MDXs. |

The MDX is not covered under the 93 month/109K mile transmission warranty extension. Here are the settlement details: Settlement Link. If your MDX tranny fails you are at the mercy of Acura's "goodwill". |
