I have a 2005 MDX and have been quite happy with it. However, today as I was driving home from work I had just got on the interstate and my drivers side window completely shattered in my lap!

Luckily I was near the emergency lane and immediately pulled over but of course I was very shaken up.

I did not see any kind of rock fly up and hit it. It sounded more like a someone shot at me. Of course I don't think that is what happened. But I was wondering if anyone else has had experiences like this?

The only thing I can think of is that it was extremely hot out-95 degrees and I turned the air conditioner on full blast. But, I still wouldn't think that tempered glass could shatter as a result of that.

I did find an older post about rear windows shattering, but nothing about side windows shattering while driving.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Did the glass fragments shutter inwards into the car or outwards?

My only experience similar to this, was one time I turned on the heat on high at full strength to defrost ice accumulation on the windshield and it cracked the entire windshield from one end to the another.

so an argument can be made that the pressure inside the car versus the outside was tremendous and it caused the window to shutter, now question is who is liable for this the manufacture or you?

The glass shattered inwards. But what is crazy is that it didn't just crack with bits of it falling out, the entire window just shattered into a million pieces as if it was hit by a bullet!

I agree with you Headbrain that I think it could have been the differing pressures in the car vs. outside. My car is black with black leather interior and it sits outside for 8 plus hours while I am at work. (I live in Atlanta where it gets very hot and humid in the summer)

I called the local Acura dealership and they are not responsible for broken windows. They said they have not heard of something like this happening but did refer me to the window company they use. I was going to go through my insurance, but it is actually cheaper to fix without since i have a deductible.

It still just boggles my mind that these type of tempered windows could shatter like that which is why I am still questioning Acura.

Check the TL forums, there have been a handful of sunroof shattering as well. Im a little leary since IIRC the majority are 06.

Nope- even though you have all the windows rolled up, the cabin is not intended to be airtight. THere are large vents behind the rear bumper that exhaust cabin air and equalize pressure.
THink about it- do your ears pop when you slam the door? No, they don't.
