I went today to the Burlingame store. They had just sold out of 8gb versions and I decided to wait rather than get the 4gb version. I did try one and it is very nice. Typing was easy, phone is easy and using other stuff was a breeze, especially since no one showed me how to use it.
Very thin, good form factor, a decent selection of accessories available already, etc. Still not sure if I'll give up my Treo immediately, but its a totally sweet phone.
Really what I think I'll do is wait until we see one with a 32gb flash drive in it. That would be freakin' awesome. Plus some good applications for it. |

I picked up an 8 GB iPhone at the local Apple store here in Reno. Went at about 8:15 pm and didn't wait in line at all :) More importantly, it only took me about five minutes to set up my new iPhone with my HFL in my 07 X! And I didn't have to reprogram all of the voice activated phone numbers, which is awesome. . . .that alone would have taken at least 30 minutes. I had a Motorola Razr before the iPhone, and it didn't show any information other than the incoming our outgoing number. The iPhone shows the signal strength in the MID and also shows the remaining battery life of the iPhone, which is cool!
I overheard a guy in the Apple store today talking to the employees about not being able to get his iPhone to work with his BMW. . . . .NO problem with the X! Cudos to Acura for making the HFL so user friendly and easy to use :)

Great news. Some will find this last statement suspect though. This seems like a fairly comprehensive review.
Coincidentally, a coworker bought one 2 days ago. I've had a few minutes to play with it. It's a nifty little thing. Excellent screen resolution. The interface takes some getting used to. The keyboard thing isn't all that hard to use. It's not very ergonomic though - it's basically a round rectangle without traction. I'd probably drop it a lot but apparently it can take a beating acording to the above review. Conclusion: I'll wait for the next generation, hopefully with a better grip. |

If you want a better grip, put a Jam Jacket or any miriad of cases that are already available. I do agree that it is not very ergonomic. . . . I have always bought flip-style phones like the Razr. This will definitely take some getting used to. You could make the argument of waiting until a better version comes out, but why? If you use it for your business, as I do, it is a tax deductible expense. A new phone and less taxable income sounds like a win-win to me. Like anything electronic, it is obsolete the minute you buy it. |

And here I was, thinking that this site would be my oasis in a world of iPhone hype sites. Between the iPhone and Paris Hilton, it's overkill.
I'll wait for at least version 2.0 of the iPhone. Those who got one, I wish you good luck with it. |

| I will also wait for the version 2.0, hopefully it will be released this coming x'mas. I'm sure the Apple engineers are now hard at work addressing the shortcomings and suggestions of many. I will now send my letter/request to Santa before others do. |

A coworker just got one. In the half-an-hour he's setting it up, the screen has pretty much been covered by fingerprint-smudge.
The typing looks painful. Reminding me of my old Handspring Treo 270.
Other than its thinness and the nice 3.5" screen, I don't see much benefit of the iPhone over my Treo 650 (not even comparing w/ the newer w/ faster connection Treos).
The limited memory w/o expansion capability (i.e. SDcard) is a deal killer for me. I have 6 GB worth of SDCards for my Treo. |

I got one the night it came it. I like it so much that it is very easy to overlook its shortcomings. Screen protector seems to make smudges a non-issue. Typing is easy. Whole experience is great.
However, I am a little disappointed that I am disappointed that I cannot initiate a call from the phone and make it work with HFL. HFL works great when the car initiates a call or when an incoming call comes; but starting a call from the phone is tricky.
I have an 06 MDX. Does the HFL ever do a firmware update? |

Yup, both for me and my wife, _love_ it! :)
Jbrowdy - I have it setup with HFL in my '05 and it seems to work fine both incoming and outgoing... |
|
|

| so does mine, but the car has to initiate an outgoing call. The phone has trouble doing it - for me at least. |

OK. I broke down and bought one yesterday. Way easier to set up all the email syncing stuff than with my Treo. It took me a moment or two to figure out getting Entourage (the Mac version of Outlook) to sync, but now its flawless. I just downloaded some TV shows to see how they are (they were free). I also bought Roxio Crunch to try to get some DVDs over to the thing (dvds with videos of me snowboarding).
Built in speakers are remarkably good. Headphones that come with are great. Worked very easily and well with my Jawbone bluetooth headset (it doesn't automaticaly un-pair itself all the time like the Treo does). I put a screen protector on that I had left from Palm Pilot days. I had to trim it slightly, and found that spritzing the sticky side with screen cleaner stuff before applying really helped cut down on bubbles. The protector keeps the smudges down, as noted above. I definitely recommend some sort of rubberized sleeve. I've dropped enough Treos to know. Syncing is obviously a no-brainer (its apple). Youtube application is cool, but I need to figure out how to get other videos on there. Youtube is better when you have a wifi connection than on EDGE. It remembers wifi passwords, and asks if you want to attach to networks (first time only - after that its automatic). Driving around town it picked up the free wifi from the street lights and I told it to connect to that.
I can log into acuramdx.org and post from it, although typing is slower than on a regular computer keyboard (duh).
Now I want a skype application for it so I can make international calls without paying through the nose. If not, I'll set up some sort of callback service. |

| Network news report yesterday said it costs $86 to replace the battery in the iPhone. |

Today's update. Went to the apple store today and got a bit of training. First off, what a smart idea to offer new user training. One of the most expensive things for other carriers is users returning devices that are "broken" when in fact the user is just too stupid to figure out how to do something and dial-in tech support morons aren't much smarter (reboot twice, if that doesn't solve it, send the customer to the store for a replacement). Yes, RTFM would probably do it, but Apple is engendering so much goodwill by doing this, its amazing. Plus, the guy was smart enough to be capturing (on his iPhone) all our requests for improvements and features and he was going to send those in. Talk about a great way to get your users to improve your product for you. I'm certain that some won't make it until the next version, but great nonetheless.
On Youtube: Right now you basically have the videos that are listed in the Apple Youtube application. They need to convert other videos to play properly on the iPhone. So don't expect to be able to go see all your cool Youtube crap for a while (I was told by Sept they'll have most stuff converted over - I don't know what that means for stuff going forward).
I learned a cool trick for typing a period (or any other number/punctuation mark) without having to totally switch over to the other keyboard (email me if you want the details, or look for the tip on gizmodo yesterday).
Right now there is no way to have one universal inbox for all the email addresses you set up on the iPhone. They should fix that. Its a stupid shortcoming.
You can't have one ringtone for all "known" users (those in your address book) and another for all "unknown" numbers. However, you can assign individual ringtones to a contact. So suzy can have one, john another, etc. You have to do that on a contact by contact basis - click the contact and edit preferences for that contact. I did like my Treo's ability to assign one ring tone for all people I "know" and another for everyone else. But this isn't a bad solution.
On the subject of ringtones: Right now what you see is what you get. There is no option to download new ringtones, transfer over ones you've already paid for (assuming you were an existing ATT/Cing customer), or turn iTunes songs into ringtones (that would be really cool). Something tells me we'll see this in the future.
There is tabbed browsing in the Safari app. This is cool. Just tap the icon on the bottom right of the screen while browsing and it'll open another tab. Then just "swipe" to switch between them.
Old iPod connection cables will work to charge the iPhone, but not to sync it. I tried my old Firewire cord from my old generation ipod and it didn't work. However, the car adapter I have for my ipod does charge the iphone.
The headphone jack for the iPhone is recessed a bit. This means that some headphones won't work (the jack just won't reach in there). I'm sure we'll see some really nice iPhone headsets soon, but this is a bit of a pain.
Bluetooth basically only works for headsets. There's no BT for syncing or stereo headsets (stupid oversight or bad decision IMO).
Quicktime videos that you take with your camera will not play on the iPhone. However, if you get Quicktime Pro, you should be able to convert them to h.264 format and then they'll play.
The Weather icon is cool, and you can add cities by clicking on the "i" on the bottom right. However, the cities will only appear in the order you add them. You can't reorganize the list (at least we couldn't see a way to do it).
This probably isn't news, but in the iPod settings, you can set it so that Audiobooks play back at higher speed. That's cool.
That's all for now. Gotta go have fun. |

Screen smudged -- so wipe it off. This is not some fragile glass that requires nothing but a lint-free cloth from a virgin lamb. Sleeve or paper towel or whatever is at hand works great -- no worries about scratches.
Typing -- actually works fantastic. Personally, I think it's easier to type on than the Treo 650 which was my previous phone.
Limited memory -- well, the built-in 8 GB is about the same as 6GB in SDCards.
It's not without its limitations, but what it does, it does better than anything out there. Feature for feature, you're right there's marginal benefit over the treo (right now), although the e-mail is incredible, the web access is far, far, far better than the treo (I never figured out how to really use the web with the browser on the treo), the built-in ipod and integration with the phone is very nice. When I bought it, I was buying it with the thinking that it would be nice and fun to have, but now I can't imagine using anything else (or going back to my treo).
Don't get me wrong, no reason not to wait for version 2 or 3 or 4, but I'm enjoying mine now.
