Leather on seats peeling away? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Still thrilled with my MDX, but last week met a guy in Muskoka that showed me his drivers seat. What a mess!!! He says he got his Black MDX in November 2000 and has had over 30 problems. He called it his "piece of junk". What concerned me the most was his seat, (in black "leather") which was peeling away on the seat edge where he climbs in every time. He picked off a piece of this leather right before my eyes!!
Has there been any other complaints about the finish?? I have noticed now my seat is creasing on the edge (tan colour), but have no breaking or tearing as of yet. This is a concern everyone should pay attention to. You will see in Acura's brochure on the MDX that they say the seats are LEATHER APPOINTED!! So Beware.

Leather, as I'm sure you know, requires care. Use Lexol -- they have cleaners and conditioners for leather and vinyl, and it does make a difference.

I can't speak to that guy's individual problem really. He may have a lemon, or he may wear sandpaper pants.

The quality of leather is SUB-PAR for price of car . The perforated leather in seat bottoms, especially backseat, too thin and tear easily. Over time this will be shown to be a major weakness of this car's interior and an irritant to MDX owners. No amount of Lexol will fix thin leather and these cars should not be suffering yet b/c of no conditioner being applied b/c none are too old.

I have a hard time believing that a lack of conditioner should cause leather to peel on a barely 1 year old vehicle.

Having said that - it could be that his leather was defective (believe it or not, that does happen) or that he mistreats the car.

That was one thing that disappointed me about the MDX - interior luxury. Not that I'm a big luxury guy - if Honda sold their version of the MDX I'd probably be much more in favor of that. But if you're going to pay luxury bucks, you should get a luxury ride. The appointments in the MDX's interior are seriously lacking; they are almost the same as my brother-in-law's 98 Accord.

Geez, calm down guys. I didn't say this guy's problems were due to the lack of Lexol. I said:

My mention of Lexol was to the original post mentioning we should pay attention to the leather. Yes, we should -- all owners of leather interiors should, by cleaning and conditioning with a product like Lexol.

LOL - nothing at you- I think we are dissapointed in the quality.
I really didnt notice its substandard quality until spent time cleaning and conditioning it myself and really see the "details". I feel that they skimped on something because it would not be a "deal killer" that would cause someone to walk away from otherwise the best SUV on market. I for one would have rather paid for upgrade in leather than worry about replacing it years from now (we plan to keep for a long time).

There's been similar posts on the TL and CL boards also. It seems pretty isolated though. From other posts I've read the size of the people that get in and out of the car do seem to make a difference. The good news is that the dealer will replace the seat skin as many times as necessary under warranty.

Thanks for the response. Yes, there was a poll recently and an upgraded interior (including better quality leather) scored quite high (just about tied with stability control, depending on the day).

This post slipped in above mine ...

Uh-oh. Maybe I should have bought the RX ;)

I guess that also means that Callista Flockhart's leather must be spankin' new.

Barry H-
That is good news that they will replace. No one in my family is over-sized. I didnt think they would do anything about tiny tears, from perf hole to perf hole. It happened when I placed hand on seat to lean across car to reach something. How should I address this with them? I assumed they would just say it was my fault and T.S..Thanks.

I have a TL-S in addition to the MDX and spend a lot of time on the TL, CL, and MDX forums. From what I've seen, when approached fairly and rationally, nine out of ten times the dealer does the right thing for the customer. Perforated leather shouldn't tear because something is placed on it. A reasonable Acura dealer would agree and should replace the seat skin under warranty without hassling you. And if the first dealer you go to says no, try another. There's an Acura dealer in NJ that has become quite famous on the TL and CL forums because of their consistently rational approach to warranty claims. They’ve sometimes helped people out when other dealers have refused. It’s a thin line though because if a dealer’s warranty claims run high statistically Acura can charge back the cost of questionable parts and labor to the dealer. Good luck.

Nope -- she ruled out the MDX after a test drive since she kept falling through the perforations :).

Good thing I don't have the nav. Or else I'd expect it to squeal at me in a Stan-to-Cartman voice, "watch the leather, fata** !"
