Scratched Rim ... what can I do??? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I had a leak patched and the place of business scratched one of my rims while taking it off. I showed it to the owner (who I know fairly well, but am not best of buds with) and he said to check on what I could do to get it fixed.

I have the SPORT rims and it's primarily scratched around where the mechanism slides alone to break the seal of the tire. Nothing horribly noticeable, yet I can see it and notice it. One scratch protrudes a little onto the face of the rim.

Any way to repair this or am I just going to have to get a new rim? I think I may have a tough time getting him to purchase a whole new one.

Thanks guys!

Ultimately, I think the shop is responsible for this. Although the shop will have you believe they can do nothing for you, they have insurance for such incidents if necessary. It could take much of your time to make them act on it, but if you're persistent, they will. You could also report them to BBB, perhaps? Sorry to hear about the damage.

I had a similar problem with the sport rims,
according to my dealer no touch paint is available, the rim has to be totally redone by a rim repair shop.

If you avoid looking at it long enough, it'll be gone (from your mind that is)... Out of sight, out of mind.

This is probably the cheapest way to go! LOL!

If I had done this myself I would probably just leave it be, but since I didn't I believe I am right to ask for it to be returned to near new.

This is total BS ! Have that shop replace your rim or I'd raise HOLLY FREAKING HELL ! THEY ARE 100% REPONSIBLE FOR YOUR RIMS ! WHY SHOULD THEY GET AWAY WITH THIS???????????????????? TOTAL BS !

I am surprised you even got them to acknowledge that they caused the damage. I have had many rims damaged by mechanics who don't care. My last vehicle someone used a screwdriver to pry off a plastic hub cover. I also like how they tend to throw the rim face down on the ground. Everytime I say something, I get the "we didn't do that". It's tough to prove.

Since they admitted to doing the damage it sounds like they are taking some responsibility. I think Fabvsix's reaction is the last resort but you are on a good path to getting it fixed. Of course the owner isn't going to just step up and agree to spend the most money up front. Give him options with the cheapest one being something agreeable to you (professional repair?). He may also be agreeable to providing you some free services in place of fixing the wheel. Not saying you would accept that but try and be creative while looking for options. When he feels like he has some kind of choice he may be more inclined to work it out with you.

If I ever bring my vehicles to have tires rotated or fix an issue with them, I MAKE IT VERY CLEAR THAT THERE ARE NO SCRATCHES, INDENTATIONS ON MY RIMS AND I EXPECT THEM RETURNED THAT WAY, IF NOT YOU WILL BE FULLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR SHABBY MECHANICS WORK PERFORMED ! So what is wrong with that? Any idiot that puts a rim faced down on pavement is a MORON and will pay for it! Trust me !

. . . wow! For a minute there, I thought we are not about a car specifically a rim. Boy you sure take care of your car seriously Fabvsix. From now on, when dropping the kids off to child care, I better start thinking about what to say to them regarding: EXPECTING THEM RETURNED EXACTLY THE WAY THE KIDS WERE DROPPED OFF...

When I drop $48,000.00 bucks for a vehicle the last thing I'll allow is some punk kid in a shop treating my investment lilke a POS ! That is why I bring my vehicles to a reputable shop and not to a fly by night operation that is careless! I don't have children, perhaps its best! :1: And if I did they would be parented by their parents and NOT DAY nightmare care! My mother always said..."your children need 15 years of parental guideance" not someone else raising your children! My parents have been married 56 years and they are the BEST and THEY raised me well! :1:

Price out a new rim at hondacuraworld.com and have them pay for it to replace the rim they damaged. Next time, it would be wise to have the business do a "walk through inspection" to verfiy the condition of the MDX. You want your ride returned in the same condition.

And then use the damaged rim as a full service spare!

go to a dealer and ask them how much for one new sport wheel and make the place of business pay for it.

I would ask the the shop to replace the rim otherwise you can take them to small claims court and file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. A reputable shop would never put an aluminum or chrome rim on a steel rim machine. Many shops have both machines, one for steel rims and one for aluminum/chrome. You can demonstrate that they were negligent by placing your rim on the steel rim machine if they did so. I think that is probably what they did. The other machine is designed specifically to prevent damage to these types of rims.

Up to you to decide if you want to pursue this especially since you know the guy and this could potentially damage whatever relationship you have.

Q: Why worry about potentially damaging a relationship with a business that provided substandard service? It's the business owner that should be concerned about losing a regular customer and goodwill.

Probably doesnt help you here but I purchased a door ding/wheel scratch plan from Pohanka Acura in Chantilly, VA. I am assuming other dealers sell this as well. Maybe you could check in to buying this policy "aftermarket" and then have the garage pay you for it. Cheaper for them instead of buying a new wheel I would imagine.

He told me something about how the rubber they put over the machine part must've slipped, etc. I'm not great buddies with the guy or anything. I need to check on this some more through Acura when I make it up there (nearest dealer is 60 miles away or so).

My wife bought a lightly used Mercedes a few years back that had curb rash on both right side rims. Dealer had a guy come in and fix the without even removing the tire. I could not tell they had ever been damaged.

I would check with the dealer and see if they have a guy that repairs rims. If not, get the price of a new wheel. Those are the only two options I would use.
