Popping sound when backing up? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Does anyone else notice a popping/creaking when backing up...just 2-4 "pops", especially when backing and turning one way or another?

It sounds like it is coming from the front of the vehicle and is not sloshing gas in the tank.

My dealer has looked over it and said that some of their new/demo vehicles do it too, just not as loudly and they cannot pinpoint exactly what it is.

Any ideas or experience with it?

Thanks.

Let me know if you can hear the same noises when you stop with moderate force (must be a complete stop). In my case I can hear it with the windows closed, the a/c off, and no radio.

It does not happen all the time. For example, if I hear 3 clicks when stopping, I then hear the same number of pops/clicks/knocks when I accelerate.

In fact I was listening tonight and trying to reproduce it.

At this point it is a known issue with no solution. I am happy that others are hearing it as it might be 'characteristic' of the vehicle, but I would hope at this price, they find a fix.

I had my local dealer attempt to fix it and they tried changing all the brake pads. I have an open case with Acura and they tell me they have been able to reproduce the noise, but at this point have no solution.

If your situation is like mine, I would suggest you call Acura and open a case. The more that complain, the sooner they might come up with a solution.

This looks like the problem I tried to describe here http://www.acuramdx.org/forums/show...&threadid=28694
It just drives me crazy ... The more I listen the more I think it is not from the brakes ... I still thinks it is from the transimission ... I hope I'm wrong .. ;)

I think it is suspension related. When mine was on the lift getting new brake pads I looked at the front and back suspension.

There are about 10 to 12 different components that attach to each wheel (control arm, sway bar end links, shocks, etc), each of which could make noise but everything was tight.

Under load when you brake something must be moving enough to make the noise and when released, acceleration, the noise returns. There is no noise after wards on rough roads or during driving.

It could be transmission or even CV joints, since that is what I equate the noise with. I have tried to reproduce the noise going in tight circles which would stress the CV joints, and they are quite.

I will just hope that eventually Acura/Honda will figure things out. I check the TSB listing and the latest is for XM, so I will probably see it posted before I am contacted.

I get that sound after I go foward and step on the brakes.. then go backwards slow and step on the brakes. It sounds like part of the braking assembly is shiftng as though it is loose.

I have the Sport model and was thinking it may be the shocks... it seems to occur with mine during low speed accelleration and decelleration. I get a bit of a sound from the rear also but not as often. I know there is a TSB for the rear suspension noise.

It would be interesting to see if this is isolated to particular model and what serial number range is seeing the problem... mine is SN 7604.

I bet we could figure it out on this site if we all compare notes.

I have a 07 MDX Base, about 10 mos old. Put me down for the same sound, it happens when you slow down, when you back up while turning the steering wheel to the right. Also I noticed when I leaned on the car in the garage while it was parked and not running there's a clicking sound every time car goes just a little forward. I had my wife do it and sounds like its coming from transmission not the brakes. My 05 pilot does not do that.
It's really bad when you're applying the brakes and turning. You get two clicks. It seems to have gotten louder or probably I'm listening for it. I had the oil changed for the second time with 12K miles and the dealer said so far design flaw and they think it has to do with the brakes. I don't think so! Car is running good and the transmission is smooth. So hopefully they'll figure this out, I hate have my car taken apart to find nothing. When the transmission downshifts without applying the brakes it is not doing it. Also both front windows rattle in cross winds and not so smooth surfaces. Please lets updates this thread if anybody gets an answer. By the way my user name is from TL type S days, now I'm an old pop.

I just traded my '06 TL for an '07 MDX (growing family) and I had a wierd squeak coming from the front ......when the car just sits there in the garage and you rock it forward & back. The hydr. fluid leaked in a trans. mount, thus producing a rattle/squeak. Maybe the MDX has the same mount?????

New member here. Just bought my MDX last month.

I have this issue also. I called the dealer's service dept. and they say there is two TSB's on this issue. It could be the front driver's side strut or ignition lock. I can see it being a front strut, but not the ignition lock.

Also I don't believe there is any TSB on this issue until I see it.

For anyone with this issue call Acura Customer Service and open an incident.

For now, my case is with Engineering and they know about the issue, but with more calls they might be more motivated to address this sooner.

Interesting... haven't tried to see if it would make the sound stopped/not running in my garage. I'll have to try that and see if it is the case for mine. I kind of hope it does because that will at least make me a little relieved since I think its suspension and not brakes or transmission. This would seem to make it a suspension issue maybe shock or shock mount. I also plan on calling Acura Customer Service too. My MDX goes in for 15000 mile service in less than 500 miles so I'll see then if anything new is out TSB wise.

Last night as I was coming down the hill, I threw the car into neutral and when I went to stop it did not do the clicking noise which makes me believe it has something to do with the tranny. Here we go again.
I called and started a case with Acura, they send they'll send it to engineering. Do we have the same transmission as the new RL. I wonder if they have had this issue?
rsnaider
My noise still happens if I try the Neutral thing.

I can also hear it when I head into my office each day since there are 4 speed bumps I need to go over.

It is not brakes, as I have had the pads replaced, but I do think it is something with the suspension.

Same here.....02 touring - 132K (Km)...
Behavior is similar as I can here the sound when backing up and stopping..
I was scare as hell as I thought it was the tranny, however dealer said it was not....
It looks to me it is related to suspension...

Brake pads were double checked as well with no indication of being the cause.

Looking forward to here how this is resolved..

I tried it in neutral and I could still hear a pop here and there. I am also interested in what is causing it.
ACURACER
Never mind, I thought it would not do the same noise in neutral, it's doing it especially when I turn the steering wheel to the left. There are other folks complaining about the samething on ther forums. I wonder if any other SH-AWD (RL) had the same issue. I'm turning the radio up until they figure what's wrong. Folks please call the Acura Customer Line so we can get somebody's attention.

Count me in as another owner with the same popping sound. I can hear it pop when I reverse slowly or when I park the car in the garage. It sounds like it's coming from the transmission. I'll call my dealer and have them check it out.

seems to be getting worse, on yahoo reviews there's couple of owners with the same problem, hopefully we'll get a fix soon, very annoying for a $ 40K car.
