Garage parking sensors? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Does anyone know where I can find garage parking sensors so I know how far I can drive up to the wall in my garage? My brother one time got one for a gift and it looked like a stoplight. I'd like to get one of those!

Thanks!

Thanks a bunch. I just found out where my brother's gift was from too, Brookstone. I saw reviews of these sensors and they're mixed. Get this, my brother wasn't paying attention to the center one night and slammed the damn thing into the wall!

Anyway, I think I might buy it in a store like Brookstone. That way, if it is a dud, I can always take it back.

Thanks again!

I use the old tennis ball trick.
Hang a tennis ball at a height so that it just touches the winshield when you pull in.
An old trick, and sorta ironic considering how technologically advanced the MDX is.

I agree completely...

If someone parks to the right of you, and will ding your car, you can get inflatable bumpers to hang between them... I make my wife park on the left, the wall has red marks all over it where she leans her door against the wall ... :3:

I have a couple of these in my garage and they work very well:

The laser parking assist seem pretty cool and cost effective. By the way I went to check out the Parking Assist in Brookstone and it retail for $35.00

I just bought the parking assist at Brookstone yesterday. I bought the floor model for $28. I also got a 3 year warranty on it for $4 just in case the thing goes out it can be replaced. I'll tell you how everything goes when I hook it up. I'll be out all week, so next week I'll install it.

Here's a previous discussion thread on this topic. It lists several options and includes some pictures:

That looks awesome. Looks like something that would appear in Dr. Evil's garage. :p

How does it work? Sounds like it is attached to the garage door opener and draws power from there?

For sure I'll give you guys a complete review of the parking sensors when I install it next week. Probably I will do it next Monday or so, stay tuned.

Also, I had one of those laser pointers too at my old house, but it was given free with my garage door opener. I was thinking about installing it at my new house, but the only bad part is that it's such a small red dot and you don't see it until it finally hits something, like the top hood of the car. I'd say it's not that bad, but for us, we park our car at an angle in the garage, so it will be nice to have the stop light positioned in the middle of the car. With the laser pointer, I would drive under it, but sometimes it would be closer to the passenger side and sometimes it would be closer to the drivers side. I guess you just have to be consistent when lining up the car.

I didn't want to take the time to string a tennis ball, so I bought one of the those little orange ball kits for about $3 and hang it from the ceiling so that it touches the windshield when the car is in the right position.

It's easy to adjust and also marks the center of the vehical.

Low tech.

If all else fails, I'm going to take your approach pdempsey.

Ok, just installed mine. Super easy. I first got a piece of wood (about 3 feet long) and put a few wedges under it then screwed that into the garage wall. I did this because I park my MDX at an angle in the garage, so I wanted the parking sensor to also be set at an angle so that it was parallel with the car.

Other than that, I just attached the parking sensor to the wood and plugged it in. I next parked the MDX where I wanted it to be, about a foot from the sensor itself. I have the sensor directly in front of the front license plate. After that, I pressed the button on top of the red/yellow/green light unit. This activated the unit for calibration. It will blink from red to yellow to green. Once on green, you can test it out!

I have run a few tests, all have worked well. Once I open the garage and am about 15 feet from the unit, it stays green. About 3-5 feet from the unit it turns yellow, so I slow down, then at about 1 foot it finally turns red. Seems to do the trick every time. Just be careful because between the yellow light and the red light you don't have too much time, so if you are driving fast into the garage, you may hit green-yellow-red really fast!

That's it! I definitely say it's a good buy. I have a three year warranty on it too, just in case!

I have a single car garage, and it is rather narrow. I need to fold the side mirrors in order to get in.

Are there any assists out there so I don't damage a side of the MDX. The problem will only get worse when I eventually get the 2008 MDX
