Shifting problems - PLEASE HELP - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have a 2002 MDX with about 68K miles. The transmision was replaced under recall at 38,000 miles. The symptoms at the time included a shuddering in second gear. Now - the car has a different problem - it sort of searches between fourth and fifth gear when cruising at a fixed speed. Only happens when the car is not under load - meaning not "working" to climb a hill or accelerating, etc. It doesn't seem to do it at highway speeds - only at speeds under, say, 60 MPH. The tach bounces back and fourth a few hundred RPM when this "searching" occurs. SOmetimes it is worse than others - really strange. I'm not sure if it is actually seaching between gears or if the torque converter is acting up. Could it be the EGR valve or fuel filter? Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You probably meant tranny replacement due to failure, as it was not a recall.

I would bring it back to Acura and have your problem documented, as it may be another tranny failure. It should have some type of warranty left on the tranny.

But you're right it could be just the EGR valve acting up - now that has a warranty extension to 80K miles.

Thanks for the reply. Hmmm.... not sure about the recall thing. About the time my tranny started acting up, I got a card in the mail from Acura that described the second gear shuddering issue. The campaign called for inspection of the second gear and tranny replacement if a defect was found. Assume that's a recall, but I could be wrong. Anyway - I've checked and the tranny has zero warranty left. The dealer suggested I call Acura. Also - the closest Acura dealer is about 2 hours away, so it isn't easy to get it there and pick it up. I am tempted to try replacing the EGR valve since the problem is so intermittent. Is it difficult to replace?

Sounds like a EGR valve problem. I wouldn't doubt if you need a new one and port cleaning.

Thanks a million for the reply! Yeah - I think it's worth a try. I do most of my own work - how do you replace the EGR valve. What's a port cleaning - something I can do on my own?

If you have the powertrain warranty extension to 80k, it should be covered. Not sure on the process to change it, but I believe someone on here has done it.
Lookup EGR valve in the search and definitely check with your local dealer, you might be in luck!

My bad. I only remembered the oiljet kit and forgot that Acura will replace the tranny if there are signs of overheating already.

Can you run an OBD scanner and see if it spits out a code? That may help differentiate an EGR valve problem from a tranny failure.

Well, I don't have a scanner - but great idea. Wonder if a local garage can do it for a few bucks?

Any mechanic worth his salt can do that for you. So can AutoZone and similar outfits.

I would check the easy one first as other mentioned check EGR, if EGR is clogged or something the similar kind behavior may happen (tach goes up and down slightly). Related question is "what kind of gas (brand/octane) do you put into your X for how long?" "how often (or did you ever) cleaned your intake system?"

EGR fix is relatively easy do that then see how it performs.

If you really felt the tranny acting funny as if it shifted up and down, check your parking brake (and regular brake) system if any of them frozen or dragging too much. Sounds interesting? right? but check it before you start looking at the tranny. (Simple thing first!). Believe it or not, such dragging brake system may cause similar feeling to the driver... (been there done that!). Wouldn't hurt to simply check the brake system....

If none of gets you any clue, then, I would start looking at the tranny.....

Good luck!
