| Wejust purchased an MDX and want to get a hitch and 4 bike carrier. We drove with a friend who has a Mercedes SUV and had a 4 bike carrier that looked great. It was very sturdy and had locks. Any suggestions. |

| Cheapest way if you're not going to seriously tow is to buy a cheaper hitch like a hidden hitch. Search for "hitch" or "hidden hitch" and you'll get a lot of hits on it. Then you can look at the various bike carriers that mount to the hitch. |

I have installed a Hidden Hitch ($140) and a Thule 4-bike carrier (model 944 at $90 on sale, or better yet the 994 model for $189). You can also add a ski carrier on top of the bike carrier for the winter season.
As William mentioned, use the Search and all the details are there.
Good lucks, |

I looked into bike racks that swing away for access to the rear hatch. Thule and Yakima make racks that move away from the car while loaded with bikes. I bought the Thule 939 and it works great. Comes with a pin lock and integral cable lock for the bikes. Down side ... $400.
For an alternate to Hidden Hitch take a look at www.hitch-web.com. Theirs is $150 and installs easily to the standard six bolt locations. |

| I got the Yakima ROCn'Gate 4-bike hitch mount rack that swings away. Purchased at REI for < $300. Very easy to get into the back of the MDX, but a bit pricey. |

I think you should have left it the way it was. With all the serious stuff that gets discussed on this board, a little humor is always appreciated (at least by me!). :D :D

Td,
Where did you find a Thule 944 for $90? Best price I could find on the 'net was $143. Thanks. |

| It was on Sale at Sportsmart last month for about two weeks :) If I have to buy at regular price, then I would go with the Thule 994 instead. I hauled bikes only about 5 to 6 times a year. If you haul more often, I would suggest to buy those like the one offered by WeatherTech since they can be inclined with the bikes on. Or those which swing away. FYI, the Thule 944 or 994 requires to remove the bike. |

I just got a set of great deals that put me in business with a hitch-rack.
Got the hidden hitch from etrailer.com for $99 + S&H
Got an awesome beefy bike rack from ebay for about $120 + S&H. http://www.rhodegear.com/01istatethree.html
Will be installing them tonight...can't wait!!!
Quick note, when I bought the rack from etrailer, I made them return it the first time due to some warping that happened during shipping. |

What I like about the Thule rack is that they are bolted into the receiver. This will avoid rattling. You can buy their STL swing lock which use a "bolt and a lock" combination. Also I like the fact that they also have the ski/snowboard carrier attachment. I do not know enough of the Rhode system to comment.
Mytonka, can you enlighten us? Especially if the Rohde system requires the dismounting of bikes before inclining the rack, the rattling aspect and whether a ski adapter is available.
Thanks. |
