| HFL not pairing, how to fix?

I've got an '06 that I'm trying to re-pair my phones to. Both phones were once paired, but I had to reset one phone, which broke the pair, and I deleted the other pair trying to re-pair the other phone.
Here's what happens now: I go through the pairing process and when I get to the spot where it says to name the phone, I say something like "wife's blackjack", then the HFL system waits a few seconds and then dumps me out. The phone thinks it's paired, but the system doesn't have it listed. I get the same results with the two different brand phones we have.
Occasionally, maybe 10% of my tries, I'll name it "wife's blackjack" and the HFL says "your name 'wife's blackjack' recognized as 'wife's blackjack' is too short and can be confusing, please rename your phone". This part gets frustrating -- if I keep saying 'wife's blackjack' (or similar short names), the name-too-short loop continues until I say a longer name, then HFL dumps me out of the pairing process. Ironically, one of the phones I used to pair was named "treo", so I know it'll accept short names.
First, I'd like to know if anyone has seen this behavior and figured out a workaround for it.
Second, if there's no workaround, I plan to have the dealer look at it, but I'd like have my bases covered so I'm not laughed out of the service aisle. Essentially, I want to know what to say or do so they take this seriously and not blame it on my phones. This stuff isn't rocket science and I'm in IT by trade, so I'm already feeling stupid enough already....
TIA. |

Man oh man. All I can say is thankfully you have to be in the vehicle when pairing, otherwise the kids would have heard some not so nice language. Actually, they would have heard LOTS of it! I'm surprised my Slate Grey didn't turn a shade of blue from the HFL experience.
Get this, I got my wife a Razr--it paired up without issue. Then work got me a Razr; same provider, same firmware, everything. The amount of grief I had trying to get the second one paired was unimaginable. The same symptoms as you describe. It's not due to the same phone being linked (it really shouldn't matter) because my replacement BlackBerry elicited the same reaction from the HFL.
My favourite is after getting fed up trying to pair the second phone, I just deleted all phones from the system, reset it (via voice command) and even unplugged the fuse--and it comes back with "[phone name] sounds like [phone name I deleted]" for the first pairing attempt. Needless to say, the names I spoke to identify the phones after that had a bit of colour to them.
After spending probably over an hour over a couple of pairing sessions (about equivalent to a year's swearing), I was ready to head in to Acura to get that b*tch HFL system replaced. I tried again the next day, and it paired up without issue. Luckily you can 'rename' the phone after it has been paired--mine sure needed to.
Suggestions: none. I tried doing it quickly, thinking something was timing out--no joy. I tried initiating the pairing from the phone--at least it indicates that BlueTooth is working as the system tells you to take a hike. Engine on, engine running--I even tried changing the voice prompt to male. To this day I have no idea why it finally paired up. I only know that I am dreading the day one of us gets a new phone.
Here's my advise--take it in to Acura and have them look at it. Maybe they'll pull up some tech note indicating this issue. If they do, let me know the fix so I can drive straight to my dealer and get it fixed. I'll bet money that I'll be able to demonstrate the problem to them, but I won't mess around with it until I know there's a working solution.

| yes, thank goodness for closed doors, cause I started naming the phone things like "the crappiest phone on earth" after a while. Ignored it yesterday, did a system reset today and it paired the first time. Go figure. |

LOL
That reminds me of when I called XM to turn on my trial subscription, their crappy voice prompt system drove me insane.
I was saying things like
"Please let me talk to a f'ing person"
"I hate you, you POS"
"F'you"
etc...
If they record that portion of the call, I hope I made someone's day
:p |

That's surprising, because the last time I called XM, I got right through and was pleased with the service. I asked them to transfer the service to my rental car while my car was in the body shop, and they actually did it *and* transferred it back at no cost.
The previous time I paired the phone, the name the HFL finally recognized was "the hardest flippin phone in the world to ..." and then it cut off. Well, no more swearing at it, for a while.... |

I'm having this *exact* problem right now with our '05 MDX. I've deleted two old phones (that paired without issue) and am trying to pair two new phones and even though it shows no phones in memory, when I name it I get the "name sounds like name, please try again." and it just dumps me out and won't pair. This is so frustrating--seeing as how easy it was initially. How do I do a system reset, and what do I lose if/when I do it? |

| The MDX user manual contains the command for resetting the system and I believe it can be had by listening to the voice prompt of the HFL. I don't remember what it was otherwise I'd tell you, but I can tell you the system reset did work. |

| Well I went out and tried it again and it worked fine for both phones. It almost acts as if when you delete a phone it doesn't really delete it until the system is powered down and rebooted (vehicle turned off). I also didn't use the same names as previously used for each phone, so that may also have something to do with it (as in, the name still resides in the database after deletion and confuses the system when you try and put a phone with the same name back). |
