'02 new transmission problem, or more of same? - Click HERE for Original Thread

First, let it be known that I'm not much of a car techie.

I purchased a certified pre-owned '02 MDX in '05 along with the extended warranty. It now has ~83K miles, and upon recent return from dealer service has begun to exhibit what I believe is its first transmission problem. I've read a lot about such problems on this forum, but the symptoms of mine seem to be a bit different.

Here's how it goes:

At cruise just over 45 mph, at which point vehicle has upshifted and tach shows ~1500 RPM, very mild acceleration (particularly on slight uphill grade) causes a disturbing grinding/gnashing sound from the transmission and a momentary upward jump of the tach by about 200 RPM. Release the throttle and the noise stops and tach falls back to 1500 RPM. Push harder on the throttle and the noise stops and vehicle downshifts and accelerates.

A couple of notes:

The condition is easiest to replicate during the AM drive to work after the vehicle has been parked overnight (overnight temp. 60-65 deg. F). Also the vehicle is usually parked overnight with its nose up a relatively steep driveway. All service has been performed by Acura dealers.

Can anyone offer comment on this apparent transmission problem? Do you think it is related to one of the many other types of transmission problems described on this site? Any thoughts on repair approach, applicable recalls or TSB's, warranty coverage, etc.?

Thanks in advance for everyone's expert feedback!

The speed at which this happens could indicate the hesitation described for an EGR valve problem. There is an extended warranty for the EGR, which unfortunately you already exceeded but you may be covered by your extended warranty. I'd check with the dealer that sold you the vehicle.

I see multiple posts on this similar types of issue today. Maybe, weather does something? Anyway, I agree with what dj-mdx2 stated. Most of all, check the easy ones first. I would do drain-refill tranny fluid and check EGR (replace if faulty) and then, see how it performs. Cross your finger!
