When to do the first Oil Change? - Click HERE for Original Thread

The new 07 MDX was born in Mar/Apr - bought in May and now has about 2200 miles or 70% oil Life with original fluids.

The thing is that I'm planning a drive from IL to CA next week.

Should I still rely on the Oil Life % indicator and change it in CA, or go ahead and change it early?

I changed mine at 3700 miles before the oil indicator said it was time. I waited till the indicator said to change the second time. Its just personal preference I think as far as the first oil change goes.

Last time I inquire about early oil change on brand spanking new Honda/Acura with a Master Honda Tech. He indicated Honda put in special additive to help seal/break in the piston ring on the VTEC engine and recommende to not to change it too early to help Piston ring sit properly. Not sure if it still applys but I would just leave it in there unless you've notice considerably decrease in performance and MPG.

My dealer said the same thing, he said to wait until the computer said it was time.

thought i've read this somewhere. wouldn't it need to be 5,000 or 6,000 miles for 1st oil change.

somewhere in the 3000 range I believe. I have also heard that the special break in additive needs to do its work.
But if it was me, if its been more than 3k and the oil is really black, it needs to be changed anyway. I know, you can go longer than that, but it may introduce more wear earlier in its life. I know, you can go 100-200k on these engines, and they will be reasonably good at the higher end, but I still like to see clean oil when ever I check the dispstick.
For a point of reference, BMW on their higher end "M" vehicles, requires you come in at 1,200 miles and dump all the fluids - oil, tranny, differential, it all comes out, and gets replaced with new.
And their special made in Europe Castrol 10w/60 oil costs up to 19.00 a liter for that 7 liter oil change..
So, do what you want I like to see cleaner more than dirtier oil, its not ever going to be cheap again, so do what you can. For example, I was just in Costco today and Mobil-1 Synthetic any weight is selling for $5/quart in a 6 quart box. I remember when it was$2.99 a quart and I thought it was too high.. I think in the long run, if you keep cleaner oil in there, there will be less chance of the engine using oil. That is always a plus to me.. Good luck with your decision making. DanF

Right now I have 800 miles, and the oil life says 90%, I will be enjoying my first oil change at the 8000 mile mark :)

...go 8K miles. Dump the oil at around 5K, if you really feel that you need to extend, and have an oil analysis done to see how the oil really stood up in your engine. Personally, I still do 3K oil and filter changer, but I guess I'm kinda anal about it. CHEAP INSURANCE is how I feel about it. Consider how much $$$ you have invested in that engine. How much does it cost to change the oil? You might also check the site "WWW.bobistheoilguy", or www.BITOG, for additional insight on oils, time to change, really ANYTHING you might want to know about oil, and a lot of other things auto related.

Do you guys know what type of oil teh X takes. Synthetic?

I purchased my mdx less than a week ago and have 1100 miles on it... the oil life is at 90%

Comes with regular. Synthetic is optional, and please don't open up a can of worms by sparking this debate again...:)

My MDX only has 500 miles on it so an oil change is a ways off. I have always done the 3000 mile oil and filter change routine on my wife's 98 Honda Accord and it now has over 150,000 mile on it. This car does not use a drop of oil between changes and has not lost any performance. Like someone else said Cheap Insurance:2:

Well.... my experience has been to change out the factory fill at less than 1000 miles, then again at 3000 miles, and then every 3000 miles. I did this on my 04 and it did not use a drop of oil in 75000 miles. I just changed out the factory fill in the 07 at 500 miles. There is no "special factory oil". By analysis (BITOG) it is simply a high moly conventional oil ie. mobil 5000/havoline/pennzoil (i prefer havoline for conventional oil). I usually switch to synthetic at 10 k. and change that every 3000 miles as well.....overkill maybe happy engine definitely.

I believe that the oil life indicator is bunk - no REAL technology behind it. No matter what you do, it will tell you to change the oil at 7,500 miles. I had the dealer install a hitch when my "Service Engine Soon - A1" indicator was on and oil life was at 10%. I had 6900 miles on the odometer and the service adviser said to wait. I had wanted it all done at the same time, but I got the story about leaving the break-in oil in the engine as long as possible.

When I got the MDX back, the oil life was at 100% so I called my service adviser to find out if they went ahead and changed the oil. He said they didn't, so I checked the dipstick to confirm that the oil was not fresh. The root cause was disconnecting the battery cable when installing the hitch. That reset the indicators.

If the oil life indicator did anything other than count miles I would be about ready for another oil change since I have been towing a 4500 lb boat all over Texas - past Acuras required severe service at 3,750 miles and I am about where the MDX should be screaming for fresh oil based on that schedule.

I agree. My Odyssey merely had a mileage clock that would display a yellow "service" light at 7500 miles. I believe my MDX uses the same technology, although displaying fancier percentages rather than a simple LED.

At 5300 miles accumulated since my last synth. oil change I have 30% remaining. Every 750 miles should equate to 10% oil life.

Got mine done at 5K miles with Mobil1. Performance is noticeably better, hence better gas milage?

boy there is a lot of misinformation out there!

BMW: I have a 2006 Z4: First oil change is 15,000 miles so I do not know where you heard of changing at 1,200 or that astronomical price for oil!

Porsche: My Boxster goes 15,000 miles between changes.

MDX: There is no question that the oil when new is BREAK IN OIL! You should not change it too quickly - follow the owner's manual.

Changing oil by color: That is an old wives tale if there ever was one!

Long Island, If you research your BMW marque, you will find that all "M" vehicles, i.e. M3, Z4M, M5, M6, all require a one-time 1200 mile oil change, and the funny thing, awhile back, ALL BMW's had that kind of interval. Now that BMW has started paying for all maintenance, its funny that the oil change interval now goes alot longer. What do you think that means? I know, you can certainly go 15k, etc., whatever interval you want between oil changes, but you will probably have a worn out engine, transmission, differential, long before those who change oil sooner. Yes, oil is certainly better than when I was a kid, and you were not even born yet, but it still has to carry all that crap in it around, and oil filters only hold so much and then they bypass oil back into the system. Yes, your computer will tell you alot of stuff about your oil, etc., but I for one am never going to consider purchasing a used vehicle that had anything close to that long an oil, tranny, differential fluid change interval. Thats all this is about, I respect your opinion and you certainly will do what you deem best for your needs. Its all good, we are just expressing our opinions, experience, inexperience, etc., here..
