With so many brands out there, I am now so confused on what kind of wax I should buy. I used to buy Meguire's but I've read somewhere in the net that Zaino's is a good brand. I am close to ordering a kit but would like to know if any of you guys would recommend this brand or is there another one better out there.

I've tried most of them including Meguires and the best by far is Xymol. Ease of use, shine, and durability. Check out consumer reports for another opinion.

I like Zymol...kinda pricey but worth it.
Some of the other quick wax work great between waxing. |

| I read somewhere in the net that when buying Zymol you gotta be careful and check the bottle. If it says manufactured in Illinois then you are actually buying Turtle Wax brand (supposedly they are in business together). If it says its made overseas then it is the real thing. I dont buy Zymol but have Turtle wax and it is pretty good. I also have used the new Armor All wax and gives a nice shine but doesnt last very long. |

Years ago when I used to have available time car care was my therapy. I've stayed in touch with it a little.
Zymol has various levels of products. I think their wax can be bought for as little as $20. But it's a so-so cleaner/wax combo. Some of their waxes go up to $300 with the name of Nippon or Japon, made for Japanese finishes costing around $40-45 for a tin. It all depends on the % of carnuba. So I was wondering, since the MDX is built in Canada where is the clearcoat finish sourced from. Which is the best Zymol wax for the MDX?
I prefer a separate cleaner or treatment for what the surface needs at any given time such as a swirl remover (love 3M for this type of stuff), compound, clay, etc. before deciding on a glaze and wax (that don't contain any cleaners).
As to brands you might want to check out offerings from Griots Garage. Also note what a lot of pros use. Frequently I see Malco. I've been able to buy Malco product at a few autoparts stores and detailshops. What a great line of products.
I also had some good luck with Meguires Pro line but maybe it isn't as competitive these days.
Can't see using Consumer Reports as a guide since they only test mainstream products, not the more interesting ones that we would seek out.

Zymol Cleaner Wax is what I use - $12 to $14 at most auto stores.
Water based - no hydrocarbons - environmently freindly.
4 times a year. I started using it on my 1988 Legend after the paint had faded and it actually brought the piant back to life; not completely but enough that you couldn't tell until you got up real close.
Remember - absolutely wax only a cool car in the shade - no sun and no hot metal. Set the wax and gloss after application with a light spray of cool water then buff with a clean cloth for a mirror shine.
Dang - I sound like a car wax salesman. Anyway Zymol does a great job and my bottles always say manufactured for Zymol in Chicago Illinois so I don't know about that Turtle Wax stuff.

Most folks on the net (go to http://www.deja.com) speak highly of it, especially on dark finishes.
I've used it on my silver ML and it's easy to use after you suffer through the initial claying/lock/polish. It doesn't leave behind white residue and that is very helpful if you have an invisible bra which will have a clearly defined line if you use carnauba wax.
Others that are supposed to be good are Blitz and S100 (both carnauba waxes, but S100 doesn't have that white residue if you forget to get all of it off). Zymol is also a good Carnauba wax..

Kenyee,
Is it safe to use clay on a brand new MDX? Mine is black, about a month old and has a few very light scratches and "webs". I'm thinking that claying will remove some of this but dunno if it will actually harm the clear coat coz I heard somewhere that clays are abrasives. |

To Kenyee:
How long did it take you to get the initial Zaino prep and wax done? How long does the mirror shine last before it needs a new application?
I've seen a couple of BMW's with the Zaino wax finish and they look great but I've always stayed away from it because I heard that it was a pain in the a-- to do the inital setup. After reading the Zainobros.com FAQ and your success I am interested.
thanks

"A light spray of cool water ?"
I never heard that before. Why do you do that? Makes buffin' easier? Part of the process?
Me personally, I pay to have my cars/SUVs waxed by hand professionally. I usually pay big bucks....but the results are worth it.
I've got 2 herneated discs in my back...there is only SO much I can physically do. Probably need a friggin' latter to wax my MDX. LOL !!!!
Zymol would be what I would use. The expensive stuff.

The light spray of cool water sets the wax and helps make the shine. After the water spray, lightly buff - kinda like a "spit shine"!
Sorry to hear about your back - I had disc surgery 3 years ago on my lowermost herniated disc and it was a tremendous success for me. Read, I can ski, surf and play golf again.

I clayed my silver ML when it was new. It's to make the surface ultra-smooth. Yes, it does work. Try not to do it in under 45F weather; the clay gets hard to stretch, but I had no choice. Clay is indeed an abrasive; you're supposed to lubricate the surface and hydroplane it across the surface. Z5 (swirl remover) should get rid of the light scratches.
The initial process does take a few days (you could probably do it in 2 if you just did one coat to start). I went nuts and put on 3 coats of Z5 and Z2. It took me about a week (borrowed a friend's garage) because I didn't want to wash it each time I put a coat on.
As for the mirror finish, it still looks that way after 2 months, but it's impossible to keep clean in Boston. I finally got a chance to borrow a friend's garden hose (I live in the city and it's impossible to park in front)-: last weekend and this weekend it snowed again so it's filthy again -:
I'd be happy to show it to anyone in the Boston area if I can borrow a hose and some hot water for about an hour ;-)

| I want to get a wax with a high concentration of Carnuba wax, but I don't want to be spending my whole day waxing & buffing. What waxes have people used that are easy to apply/remove and keep a good shine of the car (such as Griot's Garage "Best of Show" liquid wax around 23% carnuba or Zymol paste 33% carnuba). Is it a waste to spend $20 - $35 for this stuff? Are there other products out there with a high concentration of Carnuba wax? |

I just brought a Zymol "Cleaner Wax" (2 Pack Package) $14.79 from Costco Wholesale, Good Deal !!!

| I still have to order one for my new MDX, but YES I have tried the product before on my Honda Civic and I must say it's a great product. It's so easy to apply (a 2-step process actually). After washing and drying your car, use a cloth to apply the wax on the car's body in a swirling motion until totally covered. Leave it for about ten minutes and afterwhich, just wipe it with a dry cloth (no buffing). Your vehicle will have an amazing glass-like shine. In fact, it's even so easy to wipe bird "doo" off the surface after application! |

I'd be surprised if that Teflon stuff works. You need a lot of heat to bond teflon properly.
Also, w/ Zymol, there is supposed to be good Zymol and cheap Zymol according to discussions I read on Audiworld. The good Zymol is more expensive and has more Carnauba.
Other good Carnauba waxes are Blitz and One Grand. Highly recommended by Audiworld folks who are more obsessively clean w/ their cars than I'll ever hope to be :-)

Yes, Turtle Wax Inc. of Chicago DOES own the whole Zymol line. They still make & sell the "exotic" line of Zymol waxes, some of which have lots of tropical/edible waxes and do cost MAJOR $$$$ (yep THOUSANDS of dollars). The "plebian" version of Zymol is pretty good stuff, and the "exotic" line is ranges to to unbeliveable prices. For $36 you can get stuff "formulated" for a specific manufacturer. (I have never actually used the stuff, though I know Larry Emmons who runs a nice shop -- http://www.emmonscoachworks.com/home.html
-- that sells the stuff AND he says it is "maybe worth it..." they have "recipes" for various cars/colors BUT none have dyes or other crap in them, it more along the idea of certain carpet manufactrers cooperating with a carpet care methods...)
I have used Zaino, and it is nice stuff, though a bit pricey. The hardest part is cleaning old road film off BEFORE you wax, so I would recommend that you order Zaino and apply as early as possible, that way there is not much prep to do. |

Doesn't cleaner wax have abrasives in it?
Yikes !
I wouldn't use a CLEANER wax on my MDX. It is too new.
I've used them on my old 1990 Honda Accord. Did wonders!!!
