MDX-PL
Hi -
still researching used MDX market. What are the most problematic years ? From here I conclude 01 and 02 had tranny issues ? Anything else I should be aware of ?

Thanks all.

From a reliability standpoint, '01 and '02 are the only ones that seem to have a more significant concern (tranny as you mention). And that is arguable depending on who you speak with.

IMO, '03 or newer are all very safe bets and it becomes more a discussion of asking price and specific vehicle features.

I have heard and read 03's with failures too! To be safe stay clear of any Honda V6 year ranges from 1998 to 2003.......:1:

that the 01-02 are definite problem years. '03's, which might have some failures, I don't think that they have been shown to be a "problem" year. I would ALWAYS avoid new first year models, like the '07, and I would say that for ANY manufacturer.

01/02 failures didn't occur until 2-3 years out.....so your theory is null.......I thought you were all sold on that butt fug Hyndai Vercuss.....?????? Isn't that a first year model????????

Just turned 100k miles on our 01 and the only thing that needed to be replaces was a seat sensor on the passenger seat.

Oh I forgot, any V6 RL is ok as it has a 4 speed bullet proof "legend technology" transmission that seem to be somewhat excused from the glass box 5 speed transmission that goes .....Ka boom.......

'03 has the same tranny as '04-'06. I don't think the frequency of issues with any of these is on par with that of the '01 and '02.

And as f1honda fan states, even the '01 and '02 issues seem to be hit or miss with many owners never experiencing a problem.

As noted the 2003 got the new tranny. CR shows the tranny reliability as follows:
2001-2002 - full black dot (much worse than average)
2003 - half red dot- (better than average)
2004 - 2006 - full red dot (much better than average)

I believe that the 2003 only gets a half red dot and not a full one because of the EGR valve problems that mimicked tranny problems.

I do like the Hyundai. I think it shows great promise. I don't think that you've seen the new model or you wouldn't be saying that. It's a viable alternative to the MDX, at a $15-20K SAVINGS, which ain't chump change. I wouldn't buy it's first year variety of ANY car but others would, and that is their privilege. It takes time for manufacturers to work out the build problems, and they always seem to make some improvements as time goes on. Plus, there's always the hype factor with first year models which jacks the price up. You can save a lot of $$$ once the hype settles down.

01-02 trannies failed at an abyssmal rate which would make those years a NO BUY for me. Some who own them have had excellent service so, as with anything, it's the luck of the draw but based on their history, and Honda's warranty/no warranty repairs on some vs others, it's an expensive gamble as a 2nd or 3rd owner of those years. Honda also wasn't too up front on the causes for the failures. What are/were they hiding?

With the '08s around the corner I'm sure there will be some changes over the '07. If you're not in a rush you might wait to see what's out there for '08. You might save some $$$ on a leftover '07, but I'd take that gamble only if it's a late build number. Like I said, it's the luck of the draw.
