Bad reception: radio or antenna? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hi,

The MDX (mine is 2002 model) radio simply sucks. Even the car with the cheapest radio possible parked next to it has way much better radio reception of the same channel.

I have searched through some messages on this forum and notice many have the similar complaint. But I still couldn't tell if this is the fault of the radio or simply that the antenna is too short. What would be the cheapest way to fix this? Like replace the antenna with a long/flexible ones found in many cars. If so, where to buy one that can screw into the base?

Thanks.

Has this problem existed ever since 2002?

Is it more pronounced on one band than another?

Need more details.

This is the problem for any weaker channels but their signals are still strong enough for even a cheap car radio.

Any more info on this?

We, too, have a 2002 w/bad am reception. Fm is okay, not super great but way better than AM.

We've had the grounding repaired on the antenna and a new factory radio installed... same problem... kind of given up.

Long standing problem on 2002's. I am not aware of a solution. Its as if there is no AM radio at all.

I also have an '02 with nearly zero AM reception. FM is fine.

Would love to find a cure.

Just bought 2001 MDX and I have the same Damn problem. I can not stand it. I listen to lot of AM Stations.

Please help if anyone know anything about this issue.

I don't really want to replace the original Radio.

Well... I just bought a 16 inch antenna (with screwed in adaptor for japanese cars) from auto store to replace the original one. It gets a little better, I have to put another wire to the base for further enhancements. Looks ugly and still not very good.

Looks like we have to get an antenna booster.

Same here w/our 01 MDX- I thought it was the aftermarket XM I put in that caused it. The XM took care of one problem- looks awesome and only ran me $175 installed(unit w/parts and labor) at Best Buy. They guarantee to remove free when you sell car.

Yes, you have to pay $11/mo to XM, BUT if you want crystal clear radio ALL the time/anywhere you go, way to go.

Curious, if '04 MDX owners also have sucky AM reception??? We're thinking of getting a second used 04 MDX.

Does anyone know of an address we can write to Honda tech design engineers w/questions and they 1) Suggest a remendt, or 2)Suggest which model this has been improved on? I am sure their supplier figureed FM was what counted and underestimated AM users...maybe not?

Just joined this line of discussion. We have 2001 MDX Touring. The AM radio reception is very poor and in the early years we had it back to the dealer who blamed it on the technical capability 9bad0 of the window antenna. They tweaked it a few times , with minor improvements. So we basically gave up. We moved recentl y to S

What is this AM you speak of? ;-)

I haven't listened to AM in eons; I rarely listen to FM...as another post said, Sat is the way to go - uninterrupted, commercial free radio! And, imho, Sirius beats XM hands down.

I've been having this problem for years since I bought my 02, but didn't realize that AM reception was bad until I bought my Accord. By that time, my X's warranty period was over. I brought up the situation to the dealer, but they wouldn't do anything after warranty period.
