I've done the new sub, and the new door speakers are on the way.
The next question is which amp to get.
Here are a few that I've seen some people here have:
RF 550x
Zandient 5 channel?
xtant a2002, a3001, a6001
JL (model?)
alpine mrp-t130
Some people talk about bridging a 4 channel as follows: channel 1 for front, channel 2 for rear, and channel 3,4 for sub
I'm okay with losing the ability to fade front to back or left to right. I'm always centered.
Anyone have a particular amp that they love? Not too pricey, please. Wouldn't want the wife to hurt me. ;)
Thanks... |

| How much is not too much? What do you want it to power? Front speakers and sub only? |

Not sure what's best for me.
I want "good" sound out of my door speakers, and more substantial bass available. I don't wanna have bone-jarring sound, just something that I can crank up occasionally that won't get muddy and distorted at high volume.
I listen to many different types of music- everything from classical to pop to hip hop to country.
I''m ok with improved sound from just the front doors and sub if y'all think that would do.
The sub will need to fit under the driver's seat since I don't want to sacrifice my headrest storage- I keep stuff in there.
Anyone else wanna chime in?
Thanks. |

| 4 channel is a great way to go as long as your sub is single 4 ohm or dual 2 ohm. Not many 4 channel amps can be bridged to run at 2 ohms so you need a 4 ohm sub. Beyond that, really the sky is the limit. Amp range from $50- several thousands. I personally love Arc Audio amps. They are a bit on the pricey side but are also some of the best. I am actually switching back to Arc amps in my MDX. There are several companies that make really good amps for not a ton of money. Memphis, Kicker, Alpine, MTX to name a few. JL makes good amps. I have never been a big fan of Rockford but, a lot of people use them. |

Bought an Alpine PDX4.100 for about $315 off Sonicelectronix. They price matched another site. Woo Hoo! This is a screaming deal. The thing retails for about $550.
Called several install shops here and found one that will install it for me under driver's seat, with all wiring, for about $230.
I'm supposed to receive my Infinity 62.7's (for the front doors) today. Gonna dynamat and install them myself, and await the arrival of my shiny new amp.
 :18: |

Guess I should have mentioned the specs for others' benefit in the future:
Sub is 10in Infinity Kappa 102.7w --> single switchable 1ohm or 4ohm, 350watt, peak 1400watt
Front door speakers are Infinity Kappa 62.7i --> 2ohm, 75watt, peak 225watt
Alpine PDX-4.100 100watt x4channel at both 2ohm and 4 ohm. (Dont' ask me how. Read Alpine's website.)
I'll post again when it's done.:5: |

I would go with Alpine V12 series for quality sound or even the Soundstream reference series.

| Sounds like a great choice. I am actually considering the PDX amps myself so, let me know how you like it. |

OK. Finally got my PDX put in yesterday. It took the car audio place (Custom Sounds) literally all day to get it right.
I'm very impressed with the performance for the door speakers, but the sub still isn't that impressive. Certain frequencies hit just right and sound great, but mostly the base just isn't there.
I think I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and do a box. I may try to use fiber glass cast (a-la broken arm cast) material. It hardens when exposed to the air. I think I should be able to get it in there and placed like I want it... |

Woo Hoo! I finally took the time to make my own little hidden fiberglass sub box in the stock position, then I tweaked the gains on the Alpine and WOW!!!
Now that's what I call awesome!
Here's what I did:
1- packed in all the pink fiberglass I could fit in the space, leaving about a 12in diameter circle of space- (it was really more of an egg shape extending forward from the sub opening)
2- opened a package of air-hardening casting fiberglass material and applied it around the circumference of the space, bracing it up temporarily with flexible plastic that i later removed
3- mixed up some Elmer's resin and hardener and wiped it all over the new fiberglass (wearing gloves, of course)
4- pointed a fan at it for about 4 hours and walked away
5- dynamatted the inner circumference, then reinstalled the sub using butyl rubber from Ace hardware
6- turned up the gain on channels 3/4 on the amp until the bass was just right.
WHAT A HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!
Anyone who reads this and is thinking of re-doing their system, I highly recommend doing what I've done!! |
