My wife closed the garage door while the tailgate was up on my few months old MDX. Oh, the PAIN! I got a referral from the dealer for a local body shop, but I shudder to think how much it will cost me to fix this. Any ideas as to how much I should expect the repair to cost based on what you see in the attached picture? Many thanks.

It's hard to tell from such a closeup pic - you may want to get a wider angle. Was the metal bent or misshaped in any way? How deep is the scratch? If it doesn't look too deep, it shouldn't be that expensive. FWIW, it doesn't look all that bad. Still, it's like your own child got hurt.

I did the exactly same thing with my brand spanking new ML500 4 year ago after I finished waxing it. I close the garage door forget that I left the hatch open. The damage took me 3 years to fix it. It cost $450 to repair it.

The metal isn't misshaped in any way, it's just a deep scratch. I would assume this can be fixed without painting the entire panel correct? I'd much rather have a slight color change in a localized area than risk overspray.

I would try the touch up paint first, or see if the auto body shop will do a nice touch up for you. Sometimes they want to paint the whole panel, which would be $400-500.
I had a little scratch on the front end of a vehicle I used to have, and had good luck applying a couple of coats with a touch up pen, and using a clear coat safe rubbing compound in between. In the end it was a pain in the butt to do right, but ended up looking great. |
