We are newbies, after test driving a 2002 Explorer Limited today and deciding that the MDX is a much more refined vehicle. Is anyone seeing discounts off MSRP on 2001s? Not much inventory here to look at, but if one comes in maybe we should grab it. Looking at a premium (a/k/a "base") in black w/saddle.

bigjon1452,

Welcome to the board!

A few people have indicated they were able to get $500 off MSRP, but it's not common. Most who have, have either gone through buying groups, or are getting discounts because they previously purchased from the Acrua dealership.

Choice is power. Your best bet is to get a list of all dealerships in your state (and possibly neighboring states) and them. Tell them what you're looking for, and ask them to fax a quote, and ask for an ETA. If the price is reasonable, you might want to put down a deposit. At the very least, have them call you if they have any come available early. You can get a list of dealerships at the acura web site. www.acura.com

I took the liberty of getting a list of dealerships in Ohio:

ACURA COLUMBUS DUBLIN, OH 43017 (614) 761-1222
ACURA OF BOARDMAN BOARDMAN, OH 44512 (330) 726-2668
ACURA OF DAYTON CENTERVILLE, OH 45459 (937) 435-5115
COLUMBIA ACURA CINCINNATI, OH 45249 (513) 530-0100
DAVE WHITE ACURA SYLVANIA, OH 43560 (419) 885-3600
LINDSAY ACURA COLUMBUS, OH 43232 (614) 863-2885
MATHEWS ACURA MARION, OH 43302 (740) 387-1400
MOTORCARS ACURA BEDFORD, OH 44146 (440) 439-8400
PARK ACURA-AKRON AKRON, OH 44312 (330) 644-1300
SUPERIOR ACURA-FAIRFIELD FAIRFIELD, OH 45014 (513) 829-8500

As AtlantaMDX said, you might find $500 below MSRP but that's about it. We've never heard of a discount below that, unfortunately. Supply still exceeds demand for the vehicle.

Out of curiousity, though, how much are Ford dealers discounting the Explorer so far? Eventually one should see them discounting to just above invoice (and with factory incentives, below). That's par for the course for a vehicle that sells in that kind of volume.

Atlanta & William,

Thanks for the replies. Atlanta, I was thinking the same thing and have contacted several of the other dealerships around the state. Some have a great internet presence, others are just so-so.

Several have deliveries of 2002s promised in the November/Deember time frame.

The loaded 2002 Explorer Limited carried a sticker of $38,125 and we can take it on a cash deal for $34,500, or 9.5% off sticker at the "world's largest" Ford dealer.

That has to be RICART ford - I've seen their inventory from the highway - geez!

my cousin just bought a 2002 explorer limited from paul miller ford in lexington, ky for 32,000 even cash. that is below invoice, but the dealer mentioned that they get a little profit from the kickback. IMO, the explorer interior is very cheap looking, (heck, my 94 camry looks better) but my cousin couldn't stand the wait for the mdx.

Thanks, Roof and Slash. Roof, you are right, it's Ricart. We've done well there in the past, but their price was too high on the '02 Explorer and they low-balled our trade. Slash, we are patient. So, we just returned from signing up for the waiting list (70+ customers long) for a Silver/Black '02 touring. March '02 or earlier if there is a cancellation. MSRP with no add-ons or hassles. Just don't tell my dad I paid sticker for anything. Is this a great country, or what?

BigJon, was MSRP for '02 same as the '01? Can they guarantee the price, or will you be surprised later?

TD,

No guarantee on the price and they don't know the list prices for the '02s yet. They estimate a $300-$500 increase. The TL went up about $300 so they are thinking it will be in the same ballpark. There are a couple of new colors: dark blue, a different green, and refrigerator white. The new green apparently replaces two existing greens.
Good luck!
