Aftermarket Intake/Exhaust? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Does anyone have info on either an aftermarket Intake and/or a "Cat-back" exhaust being made or planned for the MDX. I have put both on all my previous cars/SUVs and have had good results. Maybe a little more noise but a definite horsepower increase. I believe the MDX would respond similarly. Honda/Acura have a huge aftermarket, I'm just not sure if they are "geared up" for the MDX - maybe not enough have been sold yet for them to make a profit. I have e-mailed Borla regarding exhaust but have not received an answer. K & N has a filter I understand but no intake system. Maybe it's a matter of time. Any input from members would be welcome.

Try e-mailing Gibson Exhaust I heard he would go after that market if he had enough interest.

I e-mailed Comptech to see if they had anything for the MDX and they said they don't at the moment, but may in the future. He told me to check back in a couple of months.

This is there web site. They make parts for the CRV, I would guess the MDX isn't to far away.

Just my $0.02, but I wouldn't expect much in the way of HP gains by messing with the carefully engineered Honda exhaust system. I have a feeling it is nicely matched to the rest of the powerplant dynamics, and any changes to it would require other changes to produce your desired effect. The original system doesn't sound too restrictive, either.

However, if you just want a different sound, or different looking muffler tips, knock yourself out. :)

I agree that the exhaust is pretty unrestrictive, and besides, it's stainless and factory mandrel bent. Why trash it?

Sideburns, for a couple extra ponies, you may want to try the K&N filter. I got it at macromotive.com for $55.38 shipped (part # KNE-33-2200). Feels a little peppier. You could also change the tips for sound. I've had experience with honda mods, and since the compression on these Japanese motors are so high, the likelihood of removing the airbox & adding an intake will probably get you going in circles trying to find where the pinging is comming from if the fuel leans out too much, or a lag on the torque curve. Fuel pressure regulators and other mods will help, but these things generally are not bolt on & go. You need to fine tune to get just right on the Hondas (just my experience). The results though are significant. I've blown the socks off of stock vtec preludes and others with my pipsqueak 1600cc Integra after changing a bunch of items, and ya cant beat the growl from under the hood!
with the right changes, maybe we can beat the X5s, MLs, and Escalades off the line and still drive home in a reliable econoSUV.
If you do try some mods or get more info, let us know what you come across.
I may be persuaded if you find success.

I love the idea of the filter change for a quick & cheap boost.

Do you know for sure that it is better than the stock filter? If so, any guesses as to horsepower/torque increases or mpg changes.

Will this affect the warranty in any way (I would guess not)?

Absolutely better than stock paper crap & cheaper over time.
My guess is it's good for 6-9 hp with no other changes.
mpg; dont really know, but manufacturer claims it better than stock.

Your engine, when you get one, will be much happier too if it can breathe better. Your motor is really just a complicated air pump.

will not void warranty or harm emissions system

I just went to the macromotive web site and they have it on sale for $44.18 till the end of today.

The MDX is similar to other Honda products I've owned or worked on, in that there are always certain compromises made on the Intake and Exhaust - usually to restrict noise. If you have been under the MDX looking at the Exhaust manifold as it enters the Cat. converter there are tight bends and a narrowing of pipe diameter. A freer exhaust manifold would probably help here but would need some good engineering and would be a tight fit. A proper header out of stainless steel would probably be in the $600-800 range. Worth 5-10 horsepower - maybe. Worth the money - maybe. A good Cat-back exhaust with a larger diameter pipe and free flowing muffler could be worth another 5-10 horsepower. Cost for a stainless system - another $500-600. Worth the money? maybe - definitely noisier. Some people like noisier. The intake consists of a large air box which contains the filter and snorkle with its noise suppression "vents". An enlarged intake tube with cone air cleaner (minus vents) has been known to add another 5-10 horsepower on other Acuras/Hondas. This can be definitely noisier when the VTEC and secondary intakes "kick in". Again, an acquired taste that not everyone enjoys. Like I said before, time and more MDXs sold will stimulate the aftermarket to create a good product that will be CARB approved and not void the factory warrantee. I'll wait patiently.

Aftermarket intake filters were discussed in a previous thread.
