Firstly I love my car. I can't get enough of it. I have had it now for one month and I was wondering if this is a part of the break-in process. When I accelerate the car feels a tad sluggish. Almost like it was resisting something. Is that normal? My gas consumption is fine and the car responds nicely once it has picked up speed but it definitely is less than perky when I set out from a stopped position. I didn't know if that sluggishness was part of idiosyncrasies of the automatic transmission or whether there is a potential problem with my car. I hope it's the former.
Thanks for the help. |

Hard to say. Sluggish to one might be OK for another. Does the engine seem to hesitate when accelerating from a standing start? If so, could be a fuel line problem/quality of fuel issue/something else.
I would take it to the service dept. and have them take a look. |

| There was a thread a month or 2 ago where people (myself included) noticed that their MDX's were sluggish first thing in the morning when they were pulling out of the garage, but right after that (presumably after the engine warms) it is fine. Could this be what you're describing? |

| ... occaissionally a little sluggish when driving off after backing out of the garage in the morning. But never after its warmed up, in traffic, etc. |

I just got mine back from the shop, where one of the issues I had was with sluggishness in the mornings when first starting out as well as occasionally, when accelerating from a stop-light.
The service advisor mentioned that it could have to do with the 4WD kicking in when accelerating...sorta-kinda makes sense.
After the initial acceleration of the day, it only really happens when I really hit the gas, or go up hill from a complete stop.
Anyone else seeing this?
Anyone agree that it is due to the 4WD kicking in? |

Even sluggish acceleration after it's warmed up for 10 minutes with only 2 adults and 2 wee chillens in the wehicle. It kind of surprised me, but she was a tad shy on the hp/torque. Dry roads were under the tires, early am, ambient temp was approx. 75 degrees F. Come on Betsy!!! Giddy yup! The mystery just keeps getting thicker.

Ken - Bellteck never complained of that problem (OR noise), maybe he would swap vehicles with you? :D
Kidding aside, it sounds like anyone with that problem ought to run it into the dealer's for a diagnostic. First I would try a tankful of Sunoco 94, though.
I don't think it has anything to do with the drive system because mine doesn't do it. If I feed the gas gently or abruptly, it always responds predictably and smoothly. |

Without further details, I'm guessing it is ok. What might seem reasonably responsive to one person might feel sluggish to another, as Pierre stated earlier.
I think our MDX seems a little sluggish when attempting to quickly accelerate at highway speeds, but I wouldn't say it is sluggish from a stopped position. That is because I compare it to other SUVs. If I compare its start-up against that of a sport sedan, then I would naturally say that the MDX feels sluggish. But when I recall all my SUV test drives, then I am still quite happy with the take-off of my MDX. It's not really a fast take-off, but I can feel the torque, and it sure seems to pull through smoothly. (BTW, I never tried the X5 4.4, but of ALL the models I tested, only the ML430 seemed to have better acceleration from a dead stop.)
I live in a very warm climate here in Arizona, and so I can't recall if temperature (especially on a cold engine) might make the MDX more sluggish when first powered up. I don't remember that being an issue last winter...
Regarding highway speeds, it sure seems like I have to punch down hard on the gas pedal to get that thing from 55 to 75! Even then, it takes awhile! I guess I'm spoiled by my A4!
Sunoco?? Haven't seen one of those for years! ;) |

| Spoiled by your A4! Hell, I drive a stage II S4 and swap on with my wife's MDX - geez! Going back to the S4 sure is fun though :) |

Sunoco 94 is the only fuel that my 928 is truly happy with! Quite a few up here in the Northeast. |

It may be sluggish but it aint fuelish now.
Since Oregon's seasonal "Oxygenated" gas requirement was lifted, in approx. April, the little truck that could's gas mileage, went from 14.4 in the city to 17.5 mpg.... I heard that they may not reinstate the Oxy Gas this winter. :~}
Now if they could only figure out how to solve the other 137 other issues I have with the vehicle, I'd be that much closer to heaven.
Pertaining to the acceleration/gas mileage issues, I did test drive the X5 4.4 a year and a half ago and as regards acceleration: "OHHHH MYYYY G****D! WEEEE HAAAAAW!!! As pertains the gas milege issue, "If you have to ask, you can' afford it!"
Wish they had an Audi dealer here, I test drove the twin turbo allroad quattro and my experience after depressing the accelerator was, oh-ok, uh-huh, oh yeah!, That's It, Woah, Wow, Yeah, Get It Now, Holy Sh*t, where the parachute!!! Now we're havin' fun!!!

| I have to agree with cotmc. I feel that the MDX is sluggish, but I have attributed that to the size of the vehicle. There is a lot of metal that needs to get up to speed. If you all feel that you have a problem, you should get it checked out. It will not cost you anything but time. |

It would be interesting to see if Comptech will have an aftermarket header for the MDX. On the TL/CL Type S, the header provides an additional 30+hp and a few more lb/ft of torque.
Switching between an S2000, an NSX and an MDX, the MDX is quite a bit slower but acceptably so given it's mass. But going from my Odyssey to the MDX, the MDX feels fast. It's all relative. |

| Thanks for all the feed-back. I suppose it's just a matter of pros and cons. I was in LA this week-end and rented some run of the mill American car. (A Buick regal if I recall). I felt like my butt was dragging on the floor and at first I thought that I would not get through the three days without my MDX. But the pick up was immediate and fast. So there you go. You lose some and you gain some. In the end, I feel like I'm on top of the world in my MDX and as safe as can be. So in light of all that, what's a moment of hesitation when I put my foot on the pedal?! |
