I'm having an issue with my gas warning light coming on even when I have around 3 gallons of fuel left.
This has been the case since I purchased the vehicle 16,000 miles ago, but it frustrated me during a road-trip this weekend, where I would get nervous about being low on gas with limited gas stations in the area, then finally filling up to find that it only drank 17 or 17.5 gallons of fuel...
Is this common for everyone? Why should it warn so early before the tank is actually low-enough to run on fumes? |

I'm of the school that says it's good to have a warning before you're running on fumes - 60 miles is a comfortable distance for me.
But, I recall that this is something that you can set as a user - do a search, you might be able to adjust the setting to warn you when you have a mile or so left! :) |

Ghost,
The adjustment you speak of is in the trip computer. I'm actually speaking about the light that comes on in the dashboard...the traditional warning light in all cars (even the classic cars :) ) |

Funny you said that. I assumed you meant the "range". I never really pay attention to the fuel light. I think when it comes on I start watching the "range". I guess I'll start watching it more closely now. I doubt their's away to adjust this.... |

I thought the trip computer set-up do adjust the threshold level for low gas light too  Can someone help shed some light on this issue?
I always plan to start looking for gas station when I am 1/4 tank left, to be on the safe side. Almost left stranded and empty in I80 during a snow storm close to Lake Tahoe. |

My guess would be the sensor in the tank might be a tad off calibration. That combined with the fact that I think early on there was an issue with fuel sloshing in the tank (Odessy problem also) might contribute to the light coming on. Wouldn't worry about it. Better early than late.......;) .

| I have this same problem with my Acura 3.2 TL. I spoke to the service manager and he said it was a common condition on the TL's (and now I'm guessing the MXD). He said if I wanted to fix it he would have to drop the tank and that I would need to remove my stereo system so that he could access the trunk. For obvious reasons I decided to deal with the premature light. |

| I don't think the fuel sensor in Honda/Acura vehicles is exceptionally advanced; my Integra also warned of low-gas pretty early as well. Doesn't bother me, though, I just understand when to gas it up. With a baby in tow, we usually keep the vehicle fueled up pretty well anyway. |

| I have the same experience, my light goes on when there are about 3 gallons left. This has been the case with several of my previous cars so I just focus on the trip odometer or in the MDX, the trip computer and recognize that I can go 330 miles or so before running on vapors. My wife is always ragging at me about the risk of running out of gas but it has not happened to me yet in 36 years of driving. |

Remember that this is a "warning" light, not an "out of gas" light. You mentioned that you put 17.5 gallons in. I thought the tank is 18. (I don't have the manual in front of me.) I'm curious, are there an extra 2 gallons after the official size of the tank? My previous vehicles usually stated a tank capacity with a comment that 1.5-2 gallons additional.
The most I've put in is 18 gallons (once), but I don't like to make this a habit. Anyone with guts that put in more??

| the tank holds about 19.2 gallons, i could be wrong, but I am sure that it is 19. something. |

| The MDX has a 20 gallon gas tank I think - I have filled 19.78 before. The gas warning light on the Odyssey and MDX first come on constantly when there is about 3.5 gallons of fuel or so left. In other Hondas/Acuras, the gas light first comes on constantly when there is about 2.6 gallons of fuel left. |

| My low fuel warning light went on for the first time of its life. I have 3800 miles on the 'DX. The gauge is close to empty, a notch above it. The trip computer says 53 miles to go. I filled her up at almost 17 gallons. |
