Cracked manik footpads - Click HERE for Original Thread

Just a note for you Manik types - I noticed last week that the rear foodpad on my driver's side was fractured around the screwhead, cracked into 3 parts. Today I noticed a crack on my step as well same place.

Now I'm not all THAT heavy, although I do climb back and forth across side steps when I'm washing the roof. But after all, they are steps, I figure stepping on them is OK.

Anyway, for those of you that have these, you may want to keep an eye on this. Just called Frank at Nordleth, who's sending a new set out.
AtlantaMDX
Ghost,

How long have you had these on? Did he give you any grief about replacing? Thanks for the info.
ghost
I had to go back to my Manik post to check (nice to have this online history of my car...) - June 30. Of course, I put both of mine on the same day :)

Frank was great - no static at all...
nwaring
We don't have the problem. I think I put ours on just before yours. I must admit though that we don't step on them. That will be changing as the weather changes. As we have discussed, have to step on them once winter starts. I'll keep an eye on them. :) :)

Did Frank mention if he's seen it happen to anyone else? That's surprising since as side steps they're supposed to be able to take a good pounding. Hopefully your's is just a aberration.

How boring, both on the same day.. the same week even! :P

I discovered an ever-so-slight split in one of mine, near the center of the step pad, before installing them. They sent me another set quickly. Great service. If they're cracking near the screw hole, any chance the screw is too tight?

When you said "crack in step as well" you didn't mean the stainless...did you? Yikes!

Two cracked Manik sidesteps ... not looking too good.

The step pads are HARD plastic with little 'flex'. I'm not sure if the step material on the Acura steps has more rubber and/or 'flex' or not.

It would have been a more secure/flexible step pad if the pads contained a little more rubber...or whatever they use to give it better grip and more flex. But, this might be a common material among side step manufacturers...don't know.

 No, no, just the pads - you're right, there should be a bit more rubber in these - they're probably going to have trouble with UV light in the long run.

Wonder if anyone makes aftermarket pads... :)

Checked my steps out today. I didn't see any cracks. But I'll keep checking and let you know.

Upon closer inspection I have small cracks around the screw heads on 3 of the four pads. Looks like they were over tightened. Ghost. Are you just getting the pads replaced?:(

I had asked Frank to ship me 2 pads and an extra bolt/nut.

I came home last night to find a box shipped 2nd day air from Manik - quick service :)

The box contained a full set of nuts, bolts and washers - no pads :(

The box came from Manik, not from Nordleth. I think Manik is confused.

I think I posted in another thread that one of my Manik foot pads have cracked. I've attached a picture so you can see how it's cracking.

Manik is sending me 4 new replacement footpads. Per DMor, they are supposed to made of a more flexible material, thus less likely to crack.

Please ignore the mud splashed on the tubes. It rained here yesterday and the client I went to had a huge pot hole with standing water in it....
DMor
Well...after all that, I too received my pads yesterday. Quick service...wrong sized pads.

Evidently they have skinny TUBULAR Maniks too. So, Ghost, can I borrow a few bolts for my non-fit pads? :) I don't think I would like the skinny sidesteps that must fit these skinny pads.

I'm waiting for another shipment, which should arrive today. Let's hope it's not the same pad style. So much for lofty connections. ;)
ghost
Atlanta, that's just what mine look like, I notice the crack is growing bigger, hope mine come today (and that they fit!)

Shame on you for posting such a dirty picture, though! :D:D

Just got off the phone with Ivette at Manik customer service. I didn't have the best connection (lots of feed back) so I will see what I get.

Eventually, someone will ask for names and numbers, so here they are:

Manik SideStep Replacement Parts

Contact Ivette @ (800) 987-8393 Ext: 6185 and order replacement step pads, etc.
ghost
Or if that doesn't work, you can call her sister Yvonne at this 900 number - she doesn't have much useful advice, but you'll forget all about your cracked pads...

:D:D
BellTeck
LOL!! Thats a different cra .... oh nevermind all this crack talk

My Acura brand steps are all good .. no cracks but a little spot where the color is changing on one of the foot pads. Other than that the dealer took this truck off road and trashed the underside with white rock and dirt.

TECK!

Are the Maniks worth all the trouble. I have factory side steps, and would consider replacing them in the future. The company that sells the bull bar makes side steps that look like the Maniks for the MDX, maybe it's better quality. My favorite aspect of the factory side steps are the acura logos on the pads.
nwaring
It depends on what look you want. If you prefer the all black then there is a choice between the branded ones and Manik. Price may be the determining factor. If you like the bright look of the stainless (DMor, Ghost, and me all have pictures in the gallery) then you can go with Manik or some other brand you may find. I personally had no plans to put on the black Acura steps because my wife and me didn’t care for the look. When DMor bought, installed and posted pictures of the stainless side steps I had an order in within a week. As far as the problems we are having, Manik is trying hard to correct it and the labor involved to fix them is minimal. If I already had the Acura steps on I don’t think I would change them. As far as the overall construction and finish quality of the Manik’s, Ghost and me will put them to the test this upcoming winter. It will be interesting to see how the finish holds up.:)

For the record, my Manik side step is cracked too. No need to post it since it looks exactly like the one posted here earlier.
Called nordleth(?) the other day and they will ship me a replacement steps. I will put silicon seal under when I install it thought that will help prevent cracking.
DMor
When I spoke with Manik, they mentioned they were over tightened at the factory and this was part of the problem, outside of the brittle material.

Might want to adjust all remaining step pads accordingly.

None of this stuff would keep me from purchasing Manik. It's a decent product and they're willing to fix it. We just have to hurdle some 'communication' issues. What else is new? ;)

I order mine about a month ago and am still waiting for them. They are apparently back ordered. Now I am having second thoughts with 4 of you with the cracked step pad problem.

I wonder if this Manik company is looking for any more distributorships. It seems with the popularity of them and the problems that everyone's having with their particular outlets that it would make sense for me to put them into my product lineup. Would anyone have any direct contact info?
DMor
Here's all the info I have on Manik.

Tim, if you do decide to carry the Manik side steps, please let us know soon including what prices you will charge. I may decide to cancel my order since they can't fill it anyway and go with you.

Replacement pads came in the mail last week, got 'em on yesterday. A pretty easy switch, but one warning - don't be too beefy in pulling off the old pads - if you break off the little plastic cylinder that seats the pad onto the step, you'll have to muck around with fishing it out of the hole, which is OK if you have nothing better to do.

I'm still up on the company - they try hard, just have some communication problems, I think they're used to dealing with a less astute clientele.... ;)

And I do think they make a world of difference on the look! :)
DMor
Are they different in material and/or look from the existing pads? More flex? How did you pry the old ones up? Slide something down under the pad to center...or pry with a towel wrapped tool? I was wondering about removing an end cap and tapping from center with a broom pole or something after loosening with a little WD-40.

I still have to call over there and get the CORRECT set.

The material seems to be the same to me, still pretty stiff. I unscrewed the old ones, lifted the ends, and wiggled it in a clock-wise, counterclockwise kind of way. The first one came off fine, I got cocky on the second one and just tried to pull it up, that one cracked off the plug. Shooting a little WD-40 (why is it always a little WD-40 :)) is probably a good idea. I think you'd have trouble getting a broom handle where you need it because of the bend in the step.

BTW, I'd asked for 2 steps, they sent me 3, but the 3rd already had its little plug broken off. Maybe they're waiting on yours till the new model comes out?

My replacement pads arrived yesterday via UPS. It took 7 days, 4 (correct) pads and 8 screws. One of the pads had the long plastic post in the center broke off. Not sure if that matters.
msu79gt82
I suspect that the primary purpose of the post is to keep the pad from shifting when you step on it. Without the post there may be too much stress on the screws which we already know is a major problem with the Maniks.:(

Sad to say the problem still exists!
I just received my new Maniks today and had them installed 90 mintues later.
I am very pleased overall , and they are certainly an eye-catcher.
I did discover one pad that had a very tiny crack by the screw. I got the info and will call for a replacement.
I went around and VERY carefully checked the tightness of all the screws.
I found the ones on one side bar very snug, and no cracks.
The other bar 2 screws seemed too loose, I backed them up, and retightned to 'snug'. They now feel very secure.
So maybe it's just the one bad pad.
It's a bad design really.
I have a hitch step from GoRhino, and the pad is pressed into the bar. In other words, I think they probably heat it, and bend it slightly and pop it in. There are no screws, and it is very secure. That's how Manik should have done it.
Everything else was fine, and I used the stainless nuts and bolts they supplied, running them in about half way before I started, to make sure I would not have a problem later.
Damn, thses steps do look sharp!
AtlantaMDX
Sad to hear they still have that problem. I got 4 replacements quite a while ago. I only had one at the time that needed replacing, but now two more have cracked. I'm sure I'll end up putting each of the other 3 on... I was hoping they'd have a solution by the time I had to do that.

I would not think it would be such a big deal to fix it right with a slight redesign, or using a different pad material.
