Hello all, I have a 2001 MDX with about 135k on it. I took it to my repair guy (Honda/Acura specialist) who told me the differential bearings were going in my transmission and I needed a replacement, which would cost about $2900.

Disappointing, to say the least; we expect a lot more out of a car that costs so much money.

I called Acura to see about assistance and they told me to take it to the dealer for diagnosis. What kind of luck have people had with getting Acura to chip in (or pay for) the transmission? Any tips for dealing with Acura? Thanks, Joe

:welcome:,
Do a search on transmission problems and you will find loads of info. Although a car with 135K on the odometer might be a harder sell to have Acura pick up the tab. Maybe they'll split it with you. Good luck!.

Like phin said, do a search. Read all the threads where people whined enough to get free work.

The dealer quoted me about $3300 for the tranny. I went to Acura Client Services to see about cost sharing. I presented recepits to show I had maintained the transmission and they offered to pay for the transmission, if I pay the labor. That brought my bill down to $1200. It pays to do your homework before doing major repairs.

This is our second trans on a 2001 that now has 110k on it. Acura offered to pay half so it would cost us $2200.
I feel that the first transm which was replaced in 2003 at 50k should be covered .and they claim we have NO warranty bc we didn't PAY for the first one!!!
Doesn't make sense to me!

Ours (2001) just went out at 111,800. Dealer told me that I would not get any goodwill assistance and am looking at $4500+ for the new tranny. Yay.

I put in a call to Client Services, we'll see how that goes but I am not hopeful since I just bought the car in April.

This is really unfortunate because I have owned 3 Acuras, and my mom was looking at picking up an MDX after seeing mine. I will make sure she doesn't at this point.

Update: They still haven't called me back, after leaving two messages with the guy handling my case.

So, apparently they don't want to deal with me. I drove the car to an independent shop to have the work done for $800 less. The irony is they are buying the trans from Acura and charging me $500 less for it than the dealer did!

In short, I am very unimpressed with Acura and this will likely be the last one I own. Once the case manager finds time in his busy schedule to finally call me back I will be sure to let him know that.

What really pisses me off is that the car isn't driveable- so I'd be without a car for this whole time while waiting for him to call me back.

So I take it that you don't do any research into reliability problem areas when you buy a used vehicle? Transmissions on pre-2003 model year MDX should be a huge red flag.

Just yesterday I found out I have to replace my 2nd transmission on my 2001 Acura MDX. I am not happy to say the least! I currently have 113, 000. miles but going through 2 transmissions does not seem right. My problem is I have a Canadian model and my dealer is not able to help me out just because of that. Has anyone else been told that?? I am currently looking into my options and even the possibilty of pursuing legal action.Any help??

Doesn't sound odd to me, and you are not the first 2001 owner I know of that's going on tranny #3. I figure these 2001-2002 trannys are good for 50-60k miles - get more than that and count it as a bonus. I had a new tranny put in my 2002 at 55k miles, and I'll get rid of it before it gets near 100k - trust me.
