MDX is just for families? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I am still considering getting a MDX, but it seems that everyone that I ask about the MDX tells me that it is a soccer mom car or that it is for people with kids. I agree that it can be, but does it have such a stereotype associated w/ it? I think it might have to do with the last generation MDX?

I am in my early 30's, single and just want a bigger car... my other option is a Lexus GS350 which is more of a sport sedan, but of course it is not as spacious... but i dont want to be known at the guy driving the new family wagon...

Image issues unfortunately in this country affect some buyers. Get what you think is appropriate for your needs/wants be it a minivan or a Pinto and to heck with everybody else's opinion.

I'm single...no kids...just traded my BMW Z4 for the MDX. Wanted an SUV so I could haul friends, family, sports related items, furniture...boxes...you get the picture.

I looked at a lot of options: Toyota 4runner, Nissan Pathfinder, Lexus, BMW X5 and the bottom line was that the MDX fit the bill the best. I can work out of the car...on the road...with the excellent NAV and Bluetooth capability, and I can handle weekend projects, and help friends move things.

I think its a great alternative for single people.

Why on earth would what you have heard some other people say about a vehicle's image have any bearing on you? Somebody thinks it is a soccer mom's car? So What. My self image does not care what someone else thinks about the vehicle I drive.

I am a grandfather. Have no kids at home. Never go to soccer games. Haul lumber on/in the vehicle. Haul bags of dirt/manure.

My vehicles are transportation. They are not a status symbol.

I ain't no soccer mom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could care less about what other people think. Before buying it, I consulted with the people that mattered the most - my family. So, do it for you.

I know a couple of single guys in Socal driving the X & loving it. They've even made some clear point: Once you drive an SUV, you'll never want to go back to a sedan.

I still won't drive a Van as its too dorky looking for me and takes all the fun out of the car. However I will alway have to have a 4WD SUV in my garage as like the last poster said. Once you drove a SUV you will not want to drive a sedan full time again.

Single here, NO kids, No dogs.........Keep in lean and mean and drive it like a sports machine........:1:

I was pondering the same thing. I drive an '04 TL, my wife drives an '07 MDX. I have to admit i really enjoy driving the MDX, I feel more relaxed, comfortable. We have one child so the size of the vehicle is not an issue. I must admit that I'm thinking of trading in the TL for an '08 MDX SPORT. I own an Aquatrax so towing capabilities are required.. Overall it drives like a car and looks sporty.

As SUVs go, the new X seems pretty butch to my eyes -- not a whole lot of "soccer mom-itis" going on here. The previous generation, on the other hand... Let's just say that out of the ten thousand or so that I see on the road on any given day, only one or two are being driven by guys. It's still rare that I spot a new X, but when I do, they're usually being driven by dudes. Not sure what to take away from this observation, but as has been pointed out already, you should buy and drive what you want.

While I love my X, I'm the first to admit that I wouldn't have bought one if I didn't have a family and their attendant junk to haul around. True, my son is only 8 months old, but I tend to keep my vehicles for ten years or longer, so by the time I unload my X, he's gonna be over ten and living in the third row, while his little sister/brother is in the second row and mommy and daddy are up front questionning the logic of adding to the overpopulation problem on this planet. Since this is my only car (I live in the big city, so I only need it for weekend duty in the country), I wanted something that drives like a sports sedan, hauls like a truck, and looks cool while doing it. And that's why the X is parked in my garage. If I didn't have a wife, a baby, and the promise of yet more babies down the road, another Benz E-Class would be sitting my garage (though with 4Matic and minus the V8 this time around).

Adam

I agree with what craniotes said. I mostly see women driving these. However; unless you buy a 400 HP Sports car or a Pickup I think that might be the case.

Anybody can drive anything but we are talking percentages and stereotypes here. I think you have picked up on something. High end SUVs are used by a lot of women to haul their kids around. If you really are concerned with this, you have the money, image means something, then get a luxury brand sedan: something sporty with more horsepower than it really needs.

All this being said, I like my X and I rarely have my kids in it. I use my wife's car for hauling them around.

Bought the X because we have one daughter and another one is on the way. 02 TL will be way too tight for 2 car seats so it was time to finally get an SUV. The X is for everybody, not just for people with kids.

I agree that you should buy whatever makes you happy. By virtue of it's cargo and people carrying capability, the majority of buyers will use it as a family hauler. Acura made a big deal about the redesign, advertising it as a family hauler that Dads will want to drive. I usually see two types of people driving the 1st gen in this area 1) mom's and 2) the close to retirement set. I have really only seen 1 or two 2nd gens around and haven't seen the drivers.......

Wow man, you really need to get what you like, and see a shrink for the self esteem issues...

To further disprove what you are saying, I am 33, married with no kids. I bought it because a) I like it, b) I wanted a sporty SUV.

Do what makes you happy, who gives a **** what others think... you will be a much happier person when you do things because you want to, not because others think you should.
BostonX
I guess it's a matter of opinion...and my opinion is that the MDX is, first and foremost, a kiddie hauler.

If I was single I'd be still be riding a motorcycle!

Speaking of psychiatrist, I know a cheap Dr who charges no more than $50/hr. He will travel if necessary. Let me know.

No Family here. Got a sportscar for the summer.

I wanted AWD for the winter (it snows up here). I have a thing against sedans - I either want a two-door sports car and if I have to get a four-door vehicle, then I want to be able to haul lots of cargo....hence my attraction to the X.

To each his own, and who cares what others think as long as it's what you want. (and you're not hurtin' anyone!)....

Me, Myself and my X! :p

No soccer moms here. We are both in our 60s and retired. Other cars are Corvettes. We love the MDX for it's comfort, size, handling, and all around driveability. Just got back from fourth road trip in the 5 months of ownership. Love it.

I don't see what's wrong with the MDX being known as a family suv. I don't have any kids yet, but I will soon have my first baby on Nov. This is the whole reason my wife and I bought the X. I love my X.
