Okay, I like my MDX fine, but whoever is responsible for this frikkin key design should be taken out back and shot.
The problem is that it never stays closed. The slightest pressure in my pocket makes it pop open and it's so damn long it makes an embarrassing - and uncomfortable - lump in the jeans. And it seems like it's gotten looser in the scant 3 months I've owned the truck.
Now, why the heck they didn't make the key and the fob separate, I don't know. By attaching the key to the end of the fob, it makes it silly long. Better yet, why can't Acura come up with a compact key/fob combo like I used to have with my BMW's? They had keys that were only slightly bigger than a normal key, but the head was the fob part with the lock/unlock/panic buttons. And they worked like a charm.
The best of all worlds would be to have the keyless system like on my RL. That way, the reasonably-sized fob could just stay in the pocket. In the meantime, I'm having to consider carrying a rubber band in my pocket to corral the ridiculous switchblade key while not in use.
Grrrr .....

Stop wearing those skintight leather jeans!
An unelegant solution is to keep your original key rubber-banded then attach your valet key to the loop of the fob. Or keep your valet key hidden/locked in the vehicle. Or have a spare made. Just throwing out some thoughts until Acura brings keyless ignition to the 2010 model year with the diesel hybrid X. |

What is infinitely worse is when your jeans push both fob buttons at once, and de-link the fob. When you start the car, all the settings are wiped out and you have to start all over again.
I want a brain-wave interface. |

Is that your MDX key in your pocket or you just happy to see me.
Bad joke aside...
I agree, the key is ridiculously large. Forget BMW, Honda already knows how to do this. My '04 Accord has they key and transmitter in a single unit and it is reasonably sized.
When the salesman first handed it to me I told him that celebs no longer need to throw cell phones at people; now they can use their key.
To make matters worse, I have found that the button to open it has become more sensitive after breaking in and it tends to open up in my (relaxed fit Levi's) jeans pocket a lot more than when it was new. |

Maybe it's time to take the circa 1980's tight Guess Jeans out back and shoot it.:D |

| Two thumbs way way down for me too. What were Acura's engineers/designers thinking? Obviously not at all. It's large, heavy, too long, & hard to hook in the chain. |

Yeah hooking it to a keychain was a PITA. I got a loaner 07 TL and they also use the same key. Nothing we can do about it now. |

Looks like Mike has been starching his Wranglers again :)
It is mildly annoying, it has happened to me a few times, but not that big of a deal |

I guess that depends on where the key sticks you when it pops open. |

Ouch! Self-induced vasectomy anyone?
Is there any key combination to make the fob vibrate? :2: |

Well, if you guys are through jacking me over the fit of my jeans ;), most of you have to admit it's a big honkin' key, and it opens 'way too easily.
The key/fob combo is almost 5 inches long when open, and that's crazy ... especially when it won't closed. Hey, Acura - how about maybe recessing the release button, so it doesn't accidentally open so often?

My contribution to this problem that could cut the thickness of the remote by atleast half ... a keyless start/stop remote. Come on Acura, get up to speed with your so called "ADVANCE" technology.

That was exactly my thoughts, all this advanced stuff then a plain old key. I've bought two new cars this year the MDX for my wife (first Acura) and a VW GTI for me, the GTI fold out key design is by far a better design. My bigger key problem is it doesn't alway recognize the right key #1 or 2.
I've been lurking for the past two weeks after getting the MDX, great site...

Agreed, I have an Audi key (same as the VW who I believe first came out with the push button flip key) that has a way better design and is older!
If Acura is playing with the big boys, MB or BMW, why not look at their designs? BMW has keyless start, with a built in key in the fob for emergency only.
Spend a couple extra bucks on the design of the fob, besides, it almost counts as advertising. when people see how 'cool' a key fob is, they'll automatically ask what you're driving. |
