Looking to buy a Base MDX in Saskatchewan Canada and the list price is $52k plus 2k Freight and PDI for a total of $54k. I have heard that Acura dealers will not move on price. What can I reasonably expect for any kind of deal? If I can't get at least 4k off of this price, I will go to USA and buy one not worried about warranty and I will use my buddies address in the USA, if the dealer requires it.

Hi roughrider

Calgarian here - I picked up an MDX in the US a couple of months ago and brought it over the border. Neither of the two dealerships in Calgary will service it and there is the warranty issue, but both of those problems aside, I have no regrets on my purchase. There are some big $$$ to be saved going south of the border. When I came back over the border in Sweetgrass, Montana, there was a large line of about 10 or so people at the customs office all importing vehicles.

I did go to Northwest acura here in Calgary and they told me specifically that the movement on the base MDX would be slight at best because of how well they were selling but on the elite and the tech, they would be willing to move alot (we never got into specifics and this was about half a year ago or so) as the elite and the tech were moving a lot slower.

Best of luck! Since I've imported, I've had several requests from friends and friends of friends asking me about the import process. If you need any assistance, let me know.

Hi there Calgarian

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. I do have a few questions about your experience in the US buying an MDX.

1. Did the Acura dealership in the US ask for a US address from you in order to seel it? I contacted a dealership in Minneapolis and they said that they cannot sell to Canadians and that I would have to find someone with a US address that I would be willing to have buy the car and then turn it over to me.
2. Did the US dealership move any on price?
3. Were there fees charged at the border for documentation, etc and how much?
4. Were there any modifications that you had to perform on the MDX to bring it up to Canadian specifications? If so, what were they and how much did they cost?
5. Did you have to pay state sales tax in the US state that you purchased it in? If not, how did you get around that?

Thanks!

hey roughrider

please take it easy on us stamps this sunday... our QB situation is looking pretty bleak. :(

1. the acura dealership story is a bit of a long one. originally i had purchased a used 2007 mdx (which they and other dealerships i had contacted had no issues with selling a used vehicle to a canadian resident). there was a lot of hassle in terms of getting the title transferred from the previous owner who was out of state and the dealership ultimately ended up selling me a new mdx. they did say that they were not supposed to do this but under the unique circumstances, were willing to do so. if you want the dealership name and the salesperson i dealt with, send me a message (the salesperson was top notch).
2. yes, the dealer moved on the price. probably not the best price i could have gotten but i still saved at least $10K at the end of the day after all incidental expenses (ie. transportation, air flight, hotel, etc.). i was satisfied with the price that i got.
3. $195 RIV (registry of imported vehicles) expense. you also need to pay an out of province inspection too. check out www.riv.ca for further details.
4. no modifications necessary. the mdx has day time running lights and km on the speedometer gauge. safety is compliant with canadian standards (as it should be, considering it was made in ontario!)
5. no sales tax. i just needed to sign an exemption form that the dealership sent to me. you will have to pay GST at the border.

sad story - i was in market mall (a mall in calgary) about a month or two ago and i ran into a friend who was asking me about my mdx. anyways, he asked me how much i saved and i told him and then he turned to his friend that was beside him and said "see?". i didn't know who his friend was but turns out he purchased his 2007 mdx in calgary. i felt so bad that i had just talked about how much money i had saved.

Thanks Calgarian, it looks like you made out all right. How did you get around the Recall Clearance letter issue? Did you get the dealership to fill one out for you as I know Honda USA will not issue one to a Canadian.

In terms of warranty, you could still take back your MDX to the USA for any warranty work, am I correct?

Also, if you could email me the name of the dealership and salesperson name, that would help me out a lot as well.

It looks like I will be making a trip to the US after all to pick up an MDX. I can't stand this blatant gouging and lack of "real free trade"!

Thanks and yes your Quarterbacking tandem being hurt is not good for the stamps but hey you know what they say, "On any given Sunday"

recall letter - you're right, honda USA will not issue the clearance letter. i covered myself in two ways here. i first had the dealership write me a letter on their letterhead saying that the vehicle i was purchasing had no recalls as at the letter date (VIN number on the letter). i then also signed up at a website: https://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/login...od%5Fhome%2Easp
which allowed me to print off a recall clearance letter. the ironic thing is neither customs nor the place where i got the inspection done asked for the clearance letter. in fact, no where in the process did anyone look at the letter. however, i may have just gotten lucky with my customs agent or the person that did my inspection.

in terms of warranty, you're correct (based on my discussion with others who have imported the mdx, my dealership, and my discussions with honda USA.

i'll email you the dealership and salesperson that i used. again, in terms of service, he was top notch (so different from sales staff in calgary).

best of luck!

Sorry to bug you about this but I haven't received the name of the dealership and salesperson that you were going to send for your purchase of the MDX. Greatly appreciated.

the auditor,

I'm heading to Arizona next week for a holiday and plan to drive back an MDX. Was looking at 2007 models because of import restriction, but someone mentioned 2008s are okay. Have most of the plan in place, but what are the particulars for the local/state sales tax? How did the exemption form work? I'll probably buy in Phoenix, stay for a week and then drive back to Edmonton. How did you exchange your money?

Regina Acura still has 2 07 Demos (Base and Tech + running boards and a few other little things); and 08 Tech Demo... I bought the 07 base and then unbought it as I paid the same price for an 08 Tech.... price: 52K + tax...

I know there is one 08 Tech coming in alongside mine which'll be Silver in color ... go down and check it out. I dealt with Darwin (Sales) and Steve (GM) - both great guys.

I just purchased a 08 Tech from Dilawri Acura in Regina, and the price was 52k + tax.... regular $59,055.... how do you get to 49k? I'm picking it up tomorrow, though...

Bought the MDX (Base model) in October 07. Negotiated $3,350 off MMSP $52,500 - thanks to a post here discussing about the invoice price in Canada. And luckily enough, we found out about the $7000 rebate on the day we picked up the MDX - 1st Nov. Filled in the form and returned 4 days later to pick up the cheque.

One "sad" thing is that if we knew about the rebate, we would have picked up the Tech instead of the Base.

Dealer is in Ontario.

so you ended up with a 6K post taxes + 3350 as a discount for a total of 9350 off
Total price was then 43150 + Del + Tax - Pretty decent deal

Here is what we paid

$49,150 + del + taxes. And got $7000 rebate.

The dealer we bought from DID NOT inform us about the rebate. It was a competitor dealer from another town who called, told us he can give us a SPECIAL discount, trying to get us to buy from him. Finally, he told us that effectively Nov 1, there was rebate from Acura, not knowing that we already signed the purchase agreement. We called and questioned our dealer right away!!!
