I read somewhere (a review, I believe) that the MDX had a feature which is reserved for only the most serious of off-road vehicles.
Something about being able to go through some pretty deep water without damaging a particular part due to it's design being water tight. The article mentioned how rare this was, and interesting that it was designed into the MDX.
Sound familiar to anyone? It sounded pretty impressive, and I think it should be added to the off-roadability arsenal when doing technical comparisons. :D |

| unless the air intake/cleaner and O2 sensor is high enough I think you can submerge the rest. But on the sane side I would not do it. |

From the Canadian Acura site has alot more detail:
http://english.acuracanada.ca/model...iew.asp#offroad
Numerous engineering changes were based on experiences gained in testing. A deeper oil
pan was included to meet the hill climbing criteria. A more effective air filter was specified
to remove dust from the engine's air supply. The tow hooks were upgraded to handle loads
imposed during extraction from stuck vehicle situations.
[/i]Waterproofing was added to
support MDX's ability to traverse up to 48-cm (19") deep bodies of water.
Throttle linkage was calibrated to provide more sensitive control over engine output at low speeds and
improved start-up feel. |

Thanks for the reply and the link. I love to read new stuff. :)
This is very much along the lines of what I was thinking. I really liked the wording and enthusiasm of the review I originally read, and I believe it mentioned a particular part. I still wonder where it came from.

According to an InternetAutoGuide.com article at http://www.internetautoguide.com/re..._Acura_MDX.html or the same article on http://www.nctd.com/01/suv/01acuramdx.cfm:
quote:
something else evident when the chassis is "naked": there's a vent tube for the differential so that water won't get into it when you are bumper deep (actually up to 18 inches) in a creek. So they have given thought to either rugged use or flooded roads. That goes beyond the usual "neutralize bad weather" approach of SUVs.

Thanks.
That is exactly what I remember reading.
I appreciate your effort and the links. :D :D
I am curious to know how many other Luxury SUVs have this feature!?
:D GO MDX! :D |

Yes, and best part is that the bilge water is expelled through the outside mirror housing. :)

So the mirror is SUPPOSED to do that! It all makes sense now! :D
So who was the guy over in the "when I top off my tank the gas over flows" thread who had to go out and try it? This is perfect for him/her! |

... in Houston due to tropical storm Allison I was forced to drive the MDX through water up to the bumper. The road by the way was only open to SUVs and trucks. We were warned by the authorities that we would more than likely get water in the car.
As I said we had no choice. I am happy to report the MDX had no problems at all and NO water. The seals along the lower parts of the door kept the water out. So maybe it is waterproof? |

Well it wasn't a luxury SUV, but remember the old VW Bug? They used to have an ad where a guy drove it into a lake and it floated. This was apparently a very popular ad campaign for VW. Of course, this led to the joke that if Ted Kennedy drove a VW, he'd have been President! |

Wow! Didn't know MDX could do that.
Maybe our Odyssey counterparts should note this before basing MDX for being over priced. Can the Odyssey do this? |

Actually the owners manuals for several of the other Luxury SUVs give instructions for driving the vehicle through deep water.

Every once in a while a car falls into the LA river (a big concrete channel now) during winter storms. A while back they clocked a VW bug that made the 15 mile trip to the ocean and was clocked at over 50 mph floating the whole way.

MGTD:
I can see it now: a couple of LA's finest sitting on an overpass, chomping their donuts and using their radar guns to clock floating debris in the LA river! I wonder which travels faster, a floating VW or the latest GSW victim?
Does an MGTD float?
Happy Trails |

| Yeah, yeah, that was me with the gas tank overflow. But I'm NOT driving through a creek to satisfy our curiosity! |
