Is there any downside to leaving the Xenons on all the time when driving instead of on Auto.

I love the look of having them on.

I'm assuming the only downside would be that they would burn out faster than normal - how much faster?

What is the life of these xenons.

You could probably google it and find some more specific answers, but xenon lights have a good lifespan compared to halogens and tungstens.

What shortens their life is lots of on-off cycles, since the startup requires extremely high voltage for the igniters to strike the initial arc. That's hard on the ballasts, the igniters and the bulbs themselves. So, leaving them on all the time isn't the issue - it's all those times they have to go from off to on.

Your X has running lights for daytime visibility, so there's really no reason to have your xenons on. I'd recommend you don't run them all the time unless you're prepared to replace them.

The xenons have about a 2500 hour life span. So if you have them on for an hour a day, every day, they would last roughly 8 years. My wife drives with them on all the time on the 01 TL and has had no issues. About the only thing you will notice is the color getting more blue/purple. The output will also deteriorate slowly as you pile on the hours.

I'll second what Mike said. With my BMWs the warning was to watch the on/off cycles which can be nasty if you park in a ramp like I do. Running the lights is fine.

For that reason I avoid using Auto, the lights are not cheap to replace.

Life is too short. I will leave mine on regardless of their life span. Beside, I am already looking forward to the 3rd gen X.
