I find it to be a louder than I expected, but definitely no where near intollerable. I drove in a friends Lexus recently, it was only marginally quietter |

| I find that road noise at cruising speed is quite low. It's almost as quite as my Cayenne S. And it suppose to be best in its class. |

I suppose the X could be quieter, but considering that I can have a normal conversation with my wife sitting in the backseat at 105mph, it seems quiet enough. A lot seems to depend on the type of pavement I'm driving over, as the Michelins seem a bit sensitive to rougher asphalt. I've noticed the same thing with my E420, which also rides on Michelins (and isn't much quieter than my X).

Do not agree. I find no disagreeable noise in my MDX unless I have the windows open, which I do a lot. I like to drive with windows open. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done about that type of noise.
I think you are being hypersensitive.

Colton is an elder, his ears may be going or he may drive it 50 MPH in the left lane.

Sorry, couldn't resist.
I agree with craniotes, it does depend on the road surface, they are using a lot of rubberized asphalt here in AZ, and it is super quiet... but that is true for every car, not just the X |

People disagree when they like what is being criticized. I don't know of the MDX's road noise yet, but perhaps it is above normal. Criticizing those sensitive to the problem is unhelpful; the question is about fixing it.
Tire type appears to be a big issue.
Dynamat is used often to deaden noise and vibration -- it is a bitumen/foil adhesive liner that adds weight to things like door panels, the hood, or the trunk. They have trunk and hood-sized liners which are used to "disperse heat more evenly", and in car audio installations.
There's the undercoatings. They add bitumen to the bottom of the car, deadening the metal and sealing gaps of air.
Fabric inside the car absorbs noise -- add a big pillow to the trunk ;-)
If anyone has experiences with these things, please post. If anyone has a sensitive SPL meter, that would be useful. Anyone concerned about MDX roadnoise can try these things, and please report back if you do. |

I replaced my Michelin OEM tires with a set of Bridgestone Alenzas, and they made a significant difference in road noise, especially on cement (much quieter).
However I did not find tje cabin noise to be bad in the first place and I agree with a previous post that undercoating will also help quiet the car more yet, but I suspect the Michelin tires are a big component since they come stock with only 9/32" tread.
Most new tires come with more tread depth like the Bridegstones I bought came with
13/32" which deeper than average.
Anyway many of you who have had a lot of cars and tires will no doubt remember how tires get louder as the the tread depth decreases and how when you need and get new tires how quiet it is all of a sudden with the new ones.
Well the factory Michelins are 30% worn out compared to my new Alenzas 9/32 vs 13/32 tread depth. Deeper treads mean more quiet all other things being equal.
:soapbox:
PS: Noth that I disliked the Michelins but the Alenzas should do better in snow.
Anyone interisted in my OEM Michelins, they only have 146 miles on them, I am going to be selling them on Ebay soon, I will be selling them for a little more than 1/2 what they sell for new on Tire Rack, Contact me if interisted. |

Well I certainly won't presume to analyze your psyche, GMC, but I do agree that it's nice to get some solid reasoning as to why our tires are so sensitive to pavement type (I've seen the same phenomenon with my Benz and Honda, which both ride on Michelin MXV Energy Plus). Thanks, mindmachine for pointing this out.
Regards,
Adam
PS - As an aside, since I've bought the X, all the roads around my house, as well as large swaths of the Boston Post Road and parts of the Cross Country Parkway and Hutchinson Parkway have been repaved with this new-fangled rubberized asphalt, and the difference is night and day. |

Yeah, probably need Freud for that one...
Here in AZ, they use a lot of concrete, because of the extreme temperatures, but they must have made some headway on the asphalt, or maybe the rubberized asphalt stands up to heat better, because they are using it a lot here. It is so nice! They were putting it on one mile stretches of the highway to test it a few years ago, and it even made my Excursion sound quiet, and that thing was seriously loud!
One nice thing out here is that since we don't have freezing temps, we don't get many pot holes :D |

| C&D has done a noise test on MDX along with some other SUVs. In comparism the results tell that MDX is on par with them in quiteness, if not better. Honestly it's unfair to compare an SUV with a passenger car in quietness. The relatively wider tires and taller body will account for the offset in noise. |

Yeah, I am 6'1" and my wife is 5'4", but other than height and weight, we are on equal ground... she is the only woman that has ever kept me in check, she doesn't take my BS, I don't take hers. I rip on her, she rips back just as fast.
My poker buddies were shocked when she started giving me **** for getting knocked out early... it doesn't help that I keep teaching her how to be better at poker, and she is winning tournaments too. All good in the end, I don't mind spending the money she wins :) |

| Fab, thanks for your kind words. Yes they sure carry some similarities and yes Philipines & Vietnamese kinda have the same look. This past weekend, my niece got married to a fine Philipines guy which she dated for the course of over 6 years. The wedding reception was well over 400 people. Half of the guests are Viet the other half are Philip. My wife & I have tried to differenciate between Viet & Philp.... and ofcourse we failed miserably. Everyone had so much fun, and YES, Philp people knows how to have a good time. |

| craniotes. Absolutely true. Vietnamese & Chinese cultures are surely different in many ways. Vietnamese wife respect not just her husband but her husband's entire in-laws just as equal. Call it old fashioned if you will, but wife would dedicate her entire life to make sure everyone get the most happiness. We both migrated to the States in our late teens, we speak/read/write/teach fluent Vietnamese. Eventho we both are US citizen for the longest time but never once forget our roots. She has been working full-time as a Registered E.R. Nurse for over 9 years. She got her music degree in "Dan Tranh" 16 strings in Vietnames National Music School in 1991 & continue playing since.... just to name a few.... |

LOL!!!
Isn't that how it is supposed to be? Wives hating mother-in-law, and vice versa? I am pretty lucky, my parents love my wife, and my wife loves my parents. I think she is the daughter my mom never had, and sadly my wifes parents have both passed away, so the in-law thing for me isn't an issue.

gmc74, you are right. She's much more than I deserve.... Of all the guys she got to pick from, I am the most male shovenist, conceited pig with the biggest BACK bone baby. :)
Yes she plays poker but not with a poker face like me. When I play poker my face turns to ICE, my breathing always steady, my heart never skip a beat. Unless a little too much marg then all hell get loose. LOL. When she got a good hand, you can totally tell right the way, because she would immediately avoid any eyes contact & breathing heavily.

That will come with time. My wife established a seriously tight image in our monthly tournament (we have about 30 players) and now she takes total advantage of it and takes down some huge pots with no opposition.
I am always hyper and shakey at the table, so I suck down a few energy drinks while I am there, and no one knows if I am shakey because of my cards, or because I am OD'ing on caffine :)
I am going to go hang out with some budies in Redlands this weekend, I should make a few hundred dollars while I am there. They all like to play poker, but none of them are very good. It is like a mine field though, you can't read someone who can't accurately read or understand the strength of their hand. |

Guys, all this socializing is nice, but you need to take it off-forum. The topic here is whether the MDX is noisy - not differences in culture and customs.
Back on-topic, I'm a little surprised the OP finds the MDX noisy. I have an '06 RL, and drive it and my 'X interchangeably, and I find the MDX a bit quieter on the highway than my RL (which is a more luxury-oriented vehicle).
There's no question the Michelins "sing" on certain kinds of road surfaces, but IMO they're FAR better than many other tires I've had. And no tire will handle coarse concrete surfaces well.
Overall, I'm happy with the noise levels in the MDX, and I also like the Michelins.

Thanks Mike_TX. I was going to create another thread, but didn't want to seem insensitive/annoyed.
Lots of noise in the thread ;-)
The MDX may be quiet, but it can be much quieter. I think someone said it was ~70dBa, which IMHO is loud for anything. I'm used to thinking that things rated for 20dBa are loud.
Dynamat FAQs-
http://www.dynamat.com/faqs_faqs.html
There's also "brownbread" bitumen adhesive sheets-
http://www.b-quiet.com/brownbread.html
these things end up looking like this inside the door-
http://memimage.cardomain.net/membe...609_16_full.jpg
Installation-
http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/S...ion.html?page=3
There's the dynamat trunk kit. The trunk is apparently second most important after the door for road noise.
Since those two brands are extremely expensive and technically very simple, there's also a bitumen-based foil-backed roofing adhesive material sold in rolls at hardware stores. If someone was really cheap, there's self-adhesive floor tiles. This is all "mass loading", adding weight to change the ability of a metal panel to vibrate, as well as adding a another barrier to sound. Ignore products that try to convince you that their 1mm-thick layer of foam will absorb all the noise.
I've got someone recommending polyurethane expanding foam, but that could warp metal panels by expanding beyond what was intended (plus it's permanent, staining, and messy), so I'm thinking a minimally-expanding latex foam would be more ideal to fill air gaps. There was a concern that things need to drain and air out, but I'm not sure if covering any holes in metal panels would cause rust/mold. |

Your bride is indeed beautiful Lion. Congrats. But, to get back on topic for a second :D , I just picked up my 08 MDX this week and find the road noise very good. It has Michelin's on it but I think some come with Bridgestone's on occasion. Anway, like I said, I just bought it so I have fresh memories on test drives. The MDX was just as quiet as all the others. I even test drove a BMW X5 for 15 minutes on the highway. That particular car was $70k!!! using the OP's Cost/decibel level expectations, this car should have been much quieter. :8:
The only thing I'm disappointed about is the lack of the Active Noise Cancellation technology that I have in my RL. It's also in the TL with the same ELS sound system as the MDX. That technology is fantastic and it eliminates the drone of the engine and exhaust. Makes the car whisper quiet. I wish the MDX had that, but it's still very quiet for an SUV. |
