Transmission shimmy at 25-30 MPH...big problem? - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have been reading up on this here and there, and today I noticed with a slow acceleration a shimmy between 2nd and 3rd gears (I am pretty sure) which is right at about 25-30 mph.

Is this what everyone else's car who had a faulty transmission was doing? I only have 80,000 miles on the car, and I noticed it beginning at about 78,000 miles. Please let me know if I need to get this checked out and write a letter to Acura...

Thanks.

Isn't this more similar to the hesitation associated with a faulty EGR valve? Better get it checked before you surpass the 80K mile extension on that.

When my tranny went, the rpms would rapidly move up to 6000 while in second gear and would not shift into 3rd unless I too my foot off the gas pedal...this would happen when I applied light pressure on the gas, it wasn't like I had the gas pedal floored.

I had the same exact problem as you at 48k and it was my transmission. If you search way back, you will see that others had the same problem as well and it was the transmission going bad.

Usually the engine and VTM4 lights go on when it is an EGR problem. I assume your torgue convertor is going bad?

Is there anything Acura will/may do for any of these problems?

I have recently purchased 2001 MDX and have noticed the shutter in the transmission at around 30 mph. I called the local Acura dealer and asked about extended warranty and he knew nothing about that. The service manager said that they would do a transmission flush and replacement of fluid using BG Synthetic Friction Fluid and that cures the shutter in about 90% of cases. Does anyone know about this and is this something I could do myself? He quoted a price of $219.95 to to the flush and fill.
Thanks

Again Acura did NOT extend warranty on the Transmission. They did for the EGR for the passenger sidebag sensor. BUT not for the transmission.

I would not do a flush, instead do a 3 time fll and drain, will take close to 12 quarts. Use the search feature and you'll find some very helpful "how-to's".

I hope he's right, but for me, when I had the shutter my tranny was shot and had to be replaced. If yours does, I would recommend calling acura client services to see if they would help you out if the dealer doesn't offer any help. Good luck.
