How about some opinions on the Pilot and the MDX. The Pilot has more room, has similar options and trhe 2wd drive is very quiet. The MDX is sweet but costs $13k more.

Depends on what your need is. The Pilot emphasizes is the U in SUV at a mid-level price point and the MDX emphasizes the S in SUV at a luxury level price point.

Test drive both and see if the differences bettwen the 2 are worth the extra $13K.

Given the dated styling of the Pilot as well as the additional cost to bring it apples to apples with the MDX, I'd say the MDX is a good 'value' for the price difference (I think it's closer to 5k-6k when you give the Pilot leather seats, 4WD, sunroof, tinted window, etc....to the base model of the MDX).

If you are ok with the base features of the Pilot and the styling however, it is a very well priced vehicle for it's class.

When Honda redesigns the Pilot, it may be a much tougher call between the two for the relative price difference. Especially if they follow the sportier direction that the MDX has gone. I really hope they DON'T have the Pilot follow the stying cues of the Ridgeline.

We have been considering purchasing a pre-owned Pilot or MDX. I think we will go with the MDX because of the luxury feel and prestige. I prefer the dash over the earlier Pilot--white LED vs green in the Pilot. When it comes down to it... pre-owned '04's are within $4,000-$5,000 of each other (MDX to Pilot). So, we're going with an MDX. We were hoping Acura would have put an HID set up in the MDX's for the 2001-2006 models, but found that NOT to be the case. So we will do an HID conversion similar to the one we did in our 2005 Accord. Happy Driving!

As a previous owner of a Pilot, I can say that the Pilot is a great value for the money. I really liked the interior width, center console (shifter on the steering column), and plenty of space to put your stuff. You can get a nicely equipped Pilot for far less than the MDX. If I didn't had the truckloads of problems I would still be driving the Pilot instead of the MDX.

The MDX on the other hand has a bit less room (3rd row only seats 2) than the Pilot but with much better handling and luxury feeling.

So far so good with the MDX.

This will get interesting when the 2nd generation Pilot is released to the public. FWIW, I'm guessing that Honda will continue to emphasize the utility factor of the Pilot with a less stylized body/interior that boasts more room than the X, and possibly go with a more off-road oriented AWD system (I'm thinking that SH-AWD will remain an Acura-only system for the time being).

Had it been out when I bought my X, I definitely would've taken a look-see and perhaps saved a bit of cash. As it stands now, however, the current versions of both the Pilot and the MDX are worlds apart.

Regards,
Adam
