Hi, Everyone!
Just a newbie here and wanted to know if there are any updates that anyone knows of regarding the weeping mirror syndrome? Talk about a P.I.T.A.! I just got my MDX last week and was sadly disappointed to learn about the dripping mirror problem after I gave it it's first bath. Wish I had come here BEFORE my purchase! I wanted silver, but would have had to wait until November for one with the Nav/Touring, so I settled for the next one coming in, Nighthawk black. We all know nothing looks better than a clean black vehicle, but how the hell to you keep it clean after it's washed and then sprays a lovely V pattern of drops across the doors and windows as soon as you drive it! And then continues to dribble for hours afterward. If I wanted this effect, I would have opted for a newborn baby instead! My salesman, professes to know nothing about this 'problem'. Well, I emailed him some of the discussions going on here regarding this manufacturing defect, but have not heard back yet. I will hammer away at this until it's corrected, I assure you. $40K for dribbling mirrors? I don't THINK so! I must say, however, after my first 500 miles in this vehicle, it FAR surpasses the Mercedes in quality, fit, finish, ride and wind noise. Bravo, Acura! Now just produce a refit for those damn mirrors!

Hi Zoom welcome aboard and congrats on your new black MDX! Most newbies will wait until their third or fourth posts to launch into a rant, but a mirror-defiled black MDX - I can see your point!

Fortunately you've come to the right place - Worm and DMor, the high priest and priestess of mirror fixes, have posted a couple levels of fixes, depending how ambitious and handy with an acetylene torch you are. Or there's always the sandwich bag route...

What part of Ohio do you hail from? The northeast and soutwest are my old stomping grounds.

Anyway, enjoy your new ride! :D:D

Thanks for the WELCOME ghost. You've obviously been around for a while. B O A R D M A N is my lo-cal. where acetelyne torches are a RARE item in the average household....now if you are looking for corrupt congressmen, you've come to the right place!
;)
Anyway, I swore I would never have a black vehicle again after my last one ('94 Bonneville SSEi). Too hard to keep clean! And now I have a vehicle that actually MAKES spots!! And dribbles!!
I know about Worm and DMor after reading their posts. But I am loathe to dismantling my mirrors to provide some 'temporary'? fix to a design problem! I really feel Acura is holding the bag here and should offer a fix, not ME! Are they going to pay me for my time to correct their deficiencies? With such a superb product, Honda should be doing something about this without reserve!
I feel confident if enough of us protest, it will be done...............on Earth, as it is done in car washes, in driveways, or anywhere else. Though I hate the 'sue happy' mentality of our society, I smell a class action lawsuit somewhere around here!

Zoomer, welcome aboard acuramdx.org! You are brave for having another black vehicle ;D Though when it's clean, there's nothing like it.

Hopefully Acura will issue a TSB one of these centuries and finally resolve this problem.

We didn't have the weeping mirror problem before probably because I don't wash the MDX that often but last week When I washed the MDX and waxed it, I went for a drive and noticed that some slimy thing on the windows and I found that it is a mixture of wax and water. I went back home and started looking into the mirrors and found that the mirrors had a step down pocket that gets deeper as it gets closer to where it attaches to the door. I assumed that water (from washing) will collect into this pocket and drip later when driving at a higher speed.
Just to be sure that my assumption is right, I sprayed one of the mirrors with a home sprayer ( around the glass part and inside the housing). I found that most of the water that I sprayed, if not all, stayed in the mirror. I was amazed to see how much water can the pocket hold. A lot, about 4 or 5 fluid ounces.
Another thing that I did was to check the other mirror, even after driving for several miles. I inserted a dry wash cloth in between the bottom of the glass mirror and the housing and pulled it out. It was very damp. This confirmed my theory that water collects in this pocket and drips later when we drive on a free way.
I don't know how Acura approved a design like this. It is definitly clear that water will collect in this pocket. The thing is, how come some people don't see this problem?
I guess not every one notices this when the water collecting in the pocket is clean.
A solution is to drill a hole at the lowest point of the pocket  so water can drain easily.
I don't think this would be a good solution for a $40 K car. Acura should find a better solution.

Welcome Zoomer. I think there are a few MDX's down your way. One I think was a doctor who shared with us pictures of the crash worthiness of the MDX. We are still the only one on the “other" end of Route 11.:)

Well Niles, (Niles, huh? I guess you ARE at the wrong end of Route 11!) there are actually quite a few MDX'ers down at this end of the pike. How I envy those lucky enough to be driving those silver beauties that show the minimal weeping mirror syndrome results. Just so you all know, I have an appointment next week at Park Acura in Akron to fix  the dreaded mirror mis-design. The service manager has told me to expect a loaner because it's going to take most of the day or longer to follow up on the instructions from Acura's headquarters. He also said a TSB has not been issued yet, but if enough complain  (are you folks LISTENING!), one will probably be eventually issued. I will keep you all posted and let you know the results of the fix:)
