I have a 2001 MDX with 105K having purchased the car used at 37K. I have had all major service done at Acura dealerships, and since 70K have complained to the service dept about the shudders, whines and rattle type noices my MDX makes. 2 test drives by Acura around 70K revealed nothing, 1 test drive by Acura around 90K revealing nothing, but finally I figured that the problems are manifest at certain grades and rpm's that I was able to duplicate last week with an Acura mechanic.
So...the Acura dealership is now on record that my tranny is bad and needs replacement, so I have contacted Client Services about a replacement tranny, letting them know I understood they have shown a pattern of replacing out of warranty trannys on a goodwill basis. The asked me questions about other Honda products I have owned, where my oil changes are done, and after a day, contacted me to say that after good consideration, they were denying my request for a replacement tranny. I had seen some posts here that suggested the warranty was extended to 108K. Is that correct? Anyway, I ask them to explain why they would deny me when they had replaced 1000's past the normal warranty, which they would not provide me a reply other than "facts and circumstances". I requested the name of the Acura Rep's superior, and left him a voice mail, and the next day, the Acura Rep called and said after further consideration, they would offer to discount the transmission repain from $4250 plus tax to $2500 plus tax as a one time goodwill gesture.
Help! what do I tell these guys? I have read posts where many receive 80-100% of the costs covered, but their offer to me seem very low. I asked them to put it in writing and have a few days left to accept. Any advice on how to negotiate with these guys would be appreaciated.
thanks in advance.  |

| ...you got what you got. Honda/Acura has been quite arbitrary on their "settlement" of complaints re: their crappy trannys. This is well documented. You can do a search on this board and others for "transmission failures" and find gobs of statements about failures and settlements. They recently gave my son 25% off on his '03 Accord with 105K miles. The next question is will you purchase another Honda product based on this experience. There are a lot of fine cars out there with good reliability ratings. Just check Consumer Reports for guidance in that area. My Acura dealer has been the WORST, but that's not the cars fault. My tranny hasn't failed yet. Try and get a 3 year/36K warranty on the replacement. Face it, even though you're out of warranty they are saving you a few bucks. You came out ahead. Would it have been nice to get more? Sure it would but would it have been realistic to get more. Given their recent settlement history I think you did about as good as you could. The next question is, are you going to keep the car? |
