| My 2003 MDX is making a horrible metal on metal sounding screeching first thing in the am upon ignition. Once the car warms up, I can start it without this sound. Is it the starter going bad or a belt issue?? |

| When it happens it only last for about 1-2 seconds, right!? That would be the starter. I had this same problem about a month back and had the dealer check it while an oil change. I was right on the money. It cost me about $460 total, but if you have the time and knowledge, you can probably do it yourself. |

Wow, replace a starter can cause more than $400. All you need to do just lose/tight about 4 bolts. Probably worth to give DIY a try to save $200. By the way, should replace it soon if it is the starter since it can damage the flywheel attaches to the engine. |

I took it to my (non-Acura) mechanic who immediately diagnosed it as a starter problem. He ordered a starter from Acura and replaced it in about an hour. BTW, the cost was way less than $400.
Thanks to all who responded! |

| Same noise started appearing with my 2003 MDX within the last week. :( Can anyone tell me where exactly the starter is located? I am definitely thinking about the DIY version with a Duralast from Autozone for ~$190 (excluding the core). For those that may have done similar replacements, how much time does this typically take for what I believe with moderate mechanical skills? |
