Sports-Tech Noise with 4 people.... - Click HERE for Original Thread

I just picked up a 2007 Sports-Tech from my local dealership. It was a demo, and has 5000 miles on it. I do like it, but it sure don't feel like 300 HP to me, coming from my 04 TL. I realize its AWD, and much heavier, but especially if you're passing, it don't have much get up and go IMO.

Anyhow, the car is great, and I am mostly alone, but I've had 4 people in the car twice now, and each time, at low speeds, maybe 30 and lower, there is popping sounds that seem to come from the rear of the car. As strange as it sounds, I don't have these sounds with its just me in the car. ??? Thoughts, ideas?

The MDX only has 300HP peak at high RPM. Sadly, there is little low end torque or power (no fast launches). With regard to the noise, you may want to check the spare tire -- others on the forums have reported that this was the culprit for their noise. If this doesn't resolve the issue, definitely report the problem to your dealer.

Welcome to the club!

Try a search for "pop" or "popping." This issue has been discussed ad nauseum, with multiple culprits being cited, and numerous solutions being offered.

As for the X being down on power, sometimes I wonder if this isn't more of a seat-of-your-pants phenomenon. True, the 3.7 makes its torque and horsepower up high, yet according to C&D (see the recent comparo-test that the MDX won), it's still one of the better performing SUVs in its class, even when pitted against V8-powered competitors such as the Volvo XC90 Sport. And from personal experience I can honestly say that I've yet to encounter a situation where I felt as though the X was underpowered -- particularly during passing manuvers, where a quick downshift to 3rd brings the engine into the meat of its powerband (again, the truth of this is borne out in C&Ds test results).

That said, I certainly wouldn't say no to another 50hp/50lbs/ft... ;)

Anyway, welcome to the club, and keep us updated on your progress with respect to the popping sounds you're hearing under full load. Hopefully your dealer will get this sorted out for you ASAP so you can get on with the business of enjoying your X.

Regards,
Adam

Congrats on your new MDX! Acura/Honda engineer their engines to generate horsepower & torque at high RPMs. You don't get 300hp until 6000rpm and 275lbs/trq @ 5000rpm. That's why it feels sluggish to you.

If I could change the MDX, I would make the 275lbs/trq available @ 2500rpm. This would make it a lot quicker.

Perform a search in this forum and you'll find a couple of threads regarding your issue.

Thanks all. Yeah I saw that SB, and that sounds like it might be the problem i'm having. Just seem strange I dont notice this with just me in the car. I also was having center channel noice, and saw a SB on that as well. Looks like I'll be taking a trip to the dealership.
