We ended up taking my buddy (who owns a new Mercedes GL450 SUV) and his wife on a short 125-mile hop yesterday.

Keeping in mind he owns a $65,000 Mercedes SUV about the size of our MDX's, it was interesting when he volunteered at least 3 very favorable comments about the 'X as we zipped down the highway. The first somment came after only about 15 minutes on the road, when he said, "This car really rides nice - not at all like an SUV."

Then, later he speaks up and says, "I really like your car. This is really nice." Totally out of the blue.

Then, on the way home he asks me what the list price was on it. When he realized it was $20,000 less than his GL450, all he could say was "Damn!" LOL.

I also showed him some of the voice recognition and Nav tricks, and I could tell he was jealous. His Nav is just okay, since M-B doesn't have the bells and whistles we do, and his doesn't even have voice recognition (that's a separate package).

His GL is certainly nice, but when you consider the stuff we have and the really minor difference in ride quality, sound insulation, etc., the 'X is a far better value. :29:

The X is a much better value.

The GL is a seriously sweet ride, though. I have ridden in one at length and it is VERY luxurious and quiet.

I still like my X better, and sure like the gas bill a whole lot more! :D

Great story. Thanks for sharing.

I cross-shopped the GL -- briefly -- but by the time I had optioned it up to the same level as my Sport/Ent... Well, let's just say that I wasn't going to be seeing much change from a seventy-two thousand dollar bill (and trust me, there were still a lot of boxes left to check). Great SUV, no doubt, but not $70K worth IMO. For that kind of scratch I'd like a bit more excitement in the interior/exterior.

That said, on a scale of 1-10, its engine rates a solid 11, and off-road it could probably spank an X like a redheaded stepchild.

Adam

Drove the GL450 it's an awesome SUV ..especially in deep snow :) ...but just like most people I can't justify giving up the extra money ...and one of those loaded is even more crazy $$$$$... I can't say the X is a better SUV than the GL... I can just say, without a question, the X is more bang for the buck.

As an '05 E320 owner, I can honestly say the interior fit and finish and build quality in general of the MB is better than my X. But I know that an E series and and X are not a direct comparison.

So last March when my '02 Odyssey's 2nd transmission was showing signs of imminent demise, I began to look for a medium SUV. My first choice was a GL450, and since my father is a retired MB corporate employee who can get a large discount on any new non-AMG, factory-ordered vehicle. (That's how I bought the E). I was ready to go that route, but even with the corporate 20-24% discount off MSRP the X was still about $12k cheaper than a GL450 comparably equipped. So far I'm happy with my choice, but time will tell how well the X holds up.

MB would have to do a lot of convincing with me to prove to me they have the quality of days gone by. My E500 was an all too frequent visitor to the service department. I bailed on that car after 18 months and 8 unscheduled visits. The GL450 is a nice truck , though.
