On the way home tonight on a 2 lane country road, 2 deer jumped out in front of my X. I was only going about 40mph in a 45mph strip, but with only a couple feet, I couldn't stop. The first one made it past the X, but the second didn't. It was a big doe....she hit twice....took out the driver's front light and bumper, fender, and bottom of driver's door. I can barely open and close the door.
I am sick..... |

Ouch! That royally sucks!! At least you didn't overreact and drive into a tree or something to avoid them.
Venison, anyone? |

I'll ask -- how's the deer?
But seriously, that sucks big time. Not that it matters, but the only time I ever hit a deer, I was 16 years old and driving my '88 Integra LS. Who knows, maybe Acuras are deer magnets?
Anyway, I'm glad that you're okay and I'm sure that your X will be as good as new in no time at all. Be thankful that there's no mechanical damage.

| That sucks :( ...I am doing the same thing here in MI.... trying to stay clear of deer on the road ...those bastards are HUGE ...I never had to deal with deer before so I am still shocked when I see them ... also I see some LARGE turkeys ...hitting those would do some crazy damage too I bet. Well at least it looks mostly cosmetic... so that's an easy fix... you'll be back on the road as normal in no time... good luck !!! |

Aside the damage from your X, I'm glad everyone escaped without injury. Deer antlers are extremely dangerous at any speed.
Don't fret your X will be good as new. |

Thanks...........
Yeah, it does suck.........its ironic.........how careful I have been worrrying that when I wash it not to create any swirl marks in the black paint, etc... And it one instant it looks like crap. Puts it all in perspective.
The sucker was a really big deer. My wife made a good point......had I been driving the RL (I traded it for the X at the end of the RL lease) that deer would have probably come through the windshield due to the fact the car is much lower.
I'm going to call the insurance adjuster and take it in for an estimate today.
BTW....MDX won....deer didn't make it. |

Oh! That really sucks too. I was thinking that Deer would be safe too. Human Beings are only to be blamed here. We are intruding their space.

 "Their space"?
I can't tell if you're being serious or not, but I hope not. If anything, we share the planet with other creatures, so it's not any more their space than it is ours.
And since we're at the top of the food chain, we win.

Glad to hear everyone is OK.
What did you do with the deer afterward? I've always loved grilled deer meat. Boy this deer would last me a whole month. Yum Yum!

Sorry to hear about your X, but look on the bright side: now that your bumper is half-way torn off, you're that much closer to installing some nifty air horns, or the lower bumper garnish, or an extra-extra heavy duty transmission oil cooler, etc..
PS: who cares about the deer, good thing you guys weren't hurt. |

Well, we jest, but the deer population in the U.S. has exploded from about 500,000 in the early 1900's to around 25-30,000,000 today!
See: HERE for more info.
This is creating a huge hazard for motorists, a pain in the rear for homeowners and business owners (like the nursery operator in the story), and a general imbalance in the natural order of things. The main reason: More restrictive hunting laws in many states.
What we need is a longer deer hunting season to thin out the population. As Ted Nugent says - "Kill 'em and grill 'em!"

A little laughter here & there doesn't hurt any one I suppose. :)
.... So I think we are down on the quality of grilled deer meat & we should keep 'em & grill 'em.
Ok. Now what happens if you hit by a dog, would you eat them still? :8: |

1. NY has a problem disposing of the 75,000 deer carcases killed by drivers every year. They're using composting now.
2. I encountered two deer frolicking on my front lawn last night when I pulled into the driveway. In your honor, I gunned the MDX onto the front lawn and tried to run them down. But they were too quick for even the X, and they split up. I have carved deep ruts in my lawn, but it was worth it.
3. Whether you git 'em with a Winchester or a Goodyear, you still git 'em. |

| Glad you're okay, and only car damage. Take it from me: I totalled two vehicles in 1 month. First one was a Chevy blazer (hit it like a 3-wood), second one was with a small Cavalier (hit it more like a 9-iron). My sister said I had my deer whistles installed backwards...drew 'em in instead of scare 'em away. Got a new Co. car out of it though. |

Glad no one was hurt, but it still is no fun to have that happen to your new car!
Good luck with the repairs. |

I'm sure this conversation is all in jest but just b/c the deer population is exploding, does not give someone justification to disregard a life (whether human or animal). If it was your animal (dog, cat, hamster, whatever), most would be devastated. Those that think it is no big deal and that animals are here for our entertainment are similar to an underprivileged child coming out to the suburbs and driving your MDX like a bat out of hell (ie without any regard to the fact that you spent your hard-earned money on a great car and rag it out). The analogy is that you have no regard for even a simple creature, nor the pretty horrific death it surely experienced. I am sure that if one of your family members or pets died in a similar way, you would act differently and hopefully with respect.
That being said, hunting is a legit sport and I respect hunters who eat what they kill and waste nothing. Most respect that they are taking a life and respect the kill. And that includes not allowing the animal to suffer. I love a good steak, and when the animal is killed in a humane manner, I feel good eating it.
Sorry, I love my X but this hit a nerve with me. Kinda like the American who goes to Europe and cannot figure out why it is not more like their hometown--then ***** about it incessantly. Or throws their cigarrette butt out the car window and then ask why American roads are not as clean as European roads. They embarrass me. |

Actually, it's NOT totally in jest. It's a serious problem, with thousands of people getting injured and/or killed every year by deer strikes. And it's not exactly like the driver is trying to hit the deer, for goodness sakes.
So, with all due respect, it's not like throwing cigarette butts out the window or complaining about European towns, and it's not about disregard for life. It IS about having more regard for human life than animal life, though, since God gave us domain over the animals of the world (that means they are there in part for our food supply). And to imply that humans are somehow doing something morally wrong by driving cars where deer are is just goofy and that hits a nerve with me. ;)

| The point of my post, simply put is that you should respect what you kill as a living animal that feels pain (in just the same manner as you, I or any other person). Plain and simple. I completely agree that safety is paramount and that hitting a deer on the road is a very serious problem. Whether you think you are better than a deer, I will leave that up to God himself. |

| I drive to work about 75miles from home, and the last 30miles to work is OVERPOPULATED with deer. Just tonight a deer almost hit me on the right side of my vehicle. Yes, the deer almost hit me, not the other way around! It was SPRINTING towards my car! But I thank the Lord for keeping me alert enough to step on the gas and prevent the deer from hitting me! SCARY! That's why I encourage all my patients who are hunters to get as many as they can LEGALLY because the deer population really needs to be controlled. A lot of people have died already from deer collisions!. But on the other hand, I abhor hunting deer just for the head or hide, and leaving the carcass on the fields... |

One thing to note is that deers do travel in groups of 2 or more. Like the case of the OP, the 2nd deer was the one that was hit. Part of the herd mentality. Once the first makes it through, the rest charges right after. Seen them crashing through the brush and past me several times already this year.
Took this from my backyard this past spring. One of several families of whitetails that roam this area. |

Even though I'm a godless, bleeding-heart liberal from New York City; the bible-thumping, Upstate Hick in me (as represented by my Ted Nugent-worshipping cousins) is forced to admit that the deer population has become critical. Unfortunately at this point in the game hunting alone won't address the issue, and as a consequence, more MDXs are going to become acquainted with our fine, four-legged friends. It's sad, but it's the price we pay for civilization. I mean, let's face it, we drove off the predators and we built the strip malls and housing developments where empty fields once stood, so what did we expect would happen?

Adam |

There goes your bleeding heart liberal bias again! Ain't no strip malls where I live; predators are welcome to hunt, too. But the deer are overwhelming the ecosystem. We shouldn't blame ourselves- let's face it, the deer just like to screw. |

If running around in the woods eating plants was the sole accomplishment of your life, what ELSE would you do for fun? :D .
Deer are a huge hazard here in the NY / NJ / CT / PA region. I remember coming home to my ex-girlfriend's house once and finding 14 bedded down on the front lawn. And this was in a subdivision!
When we go to my in-laws in the Poconos, almost once a trip a deer shoots out from between the trees into my path. |

Perhaps deers get stress just like human do (from eating all day that is). Another thought I'm wondering if they're intentionally playing the game among themselves "Are You Tougher Than Me?".
