The D5 started flashing on me last week and i took it to Suburban Acura in Novi, MI. The estimate is a whopping $4K - replace trans, mounts, bunch of other things.

Acura Client services is no help: all they say is take it to another dealer if you don't like the first one. I have 105K miles and it's been serviced and taken care of always at the dealership.

Anyone know of how to get to the regional manager/director at Acura? Email?

My other car is an RL with almost 145K miles on it and had never given me any issues. What's up with the MDX transmission? Do they build it to last 100K and teach their customer support to just be rude to anyone who calls with a problem??

You got 106k miles out of one tranmission? Consider yourself lucky. I know people who have replaced 2 by 110k. I replaced mine at 56k.

The 2001/2002 transmissions definitely had a flaw that was addressed by a recall. The recall installed a kit which sprayed oil directly on a gear that was overheating inside that series transmission. It was only an interim fix, as the transmission was redesigned for 2003 on up.

Strangely, some members of this forum have reported dealers replacing the tranny on favorable terms on vehicles which had not incorporated the recall yet. Because the recall was safety related (the transmission could suddenly lock at highway speeds, causing loss of control), transmissions that started coming apart were covered, if they didn't already have the fix installed. A classic 'Catch 22' situation.

Was that recall performed on your car?

Even if the recall had been completed, many folks have been able to split the repair costs on a more reasonable basis.

Hi highcountrymdx,

Yes, the recall was completed in 2004 which is why I fail to understand why the issue has come back. The dealer called me today to say that he has not 'forgotten me' and he's going to discuss with his manager to see what they want to do.

RajAcuraMDX-

Let's hope these character in the front office come to their senses and offer you a reasonable accommodation to what they've put you through. It's only fair.

BTW-
Dealers are not allowed to overhaul transmissions on site. Transmissions are replaced as a rebuilt whole, never new.

Good luck.

The oil jet kit recall addresses one rare failure mode because that failure mode is a safety issue. There are more common failure modes as Supertech notes: Link

I posted the following on the Accord board but I'll do it here for info (if I haven't already...I don't remember):

Regarding my son's '03 Accord EXL tranny that took a dump. Honda gave 25% toward the repair. Others (Acura and Honda) have received total labor or total parts or even 100%. I found their response to this continuing problem to be quite arbitrary so I contacted Honda and today spoke to their rep. He said their criteria is based on loyalty to Honda (purchase) and dealer (maintenance). Well, we have 6 hondas in the family, not including 5 dirt bikes, 3 of which my son (39 years of age) races. Thought we passed the loyalty test. As far as maintenance both the Acura and Honda dealers have damaged our cars during maintenace (Acura wrecked the 30K mile engine doing a warranty repair), so not too loyal to them for obvious reasons, but still use them for warranty work until the warranty expires. Told him about variety of considerations Honda has given, even a 100% on reported 177K mile car. He couldn't comment specifically on that car, and I understand that because neither of us know the details, only what was reported. He did say something interesting, however. He said that if that owner had NOT done the transmission recall fix and the tranny failed, REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE Honda would have been obligated to provide 100% replacement. So, if they recall your car and you get it fixed and the component subsequently fails they will not cover the repair. If you do NOT do the recall and the part subsequently fails they will cover it 100%. What will you do at the next recall? Lesson learned!

Dealer called to inform that they will take care of the parts and says if I get the timing belt done (105K - due now) then my total cost is around $2k. Does this sound fair?

I've been told that when I have my timing belt done, it will cost an estimated $1050. Based on other posts, the cost to install the tranny is around $1000. Sounds like they're covering the tranny and you are paying for installation.

If they're including the price of the 105K service, then essentially you're paying for labor, which is not too bad of a deal if you plan on keeping it. I'd have them repair it and sell it later - just my .02.
