Okay.. this is my second post, somehow my first one got lost..

Hello, I just bought MDX 2008 two days ago and most expensive car I ever purchased.. :-)

I live in Montreal, where we need to drive through snows and salts most of year so I decide to take the extra rustproof and undercoating from dealer but after doing some research, it seems these Acura don't really need extra protection.

My question/concern is that will these rustproof and undercoating will make my MDX heavier and consume more gas? (sorry if this is stupid Question..) and beside money, is there any other reason why I shouldn't have taken rustproof and undercoating?

Thank you in advance and looking forward to share many good info with you all.

Regards,
SK

Complete waste of money.

Rip off.

Read Consumer Reports.

Read your Acura warranty: 5 years unlimited mileage.

But if you insist on doing this, then do it before you even drive it out of the dealer.

If you wait then any debris, water, etc. with be encapsulated by the rustproofing which will cause rust!

Bottom line: This type of dealer add on died over 10 years ago in the states.

It's a rip off I think also ...money better spent extending the bumper to bumper warranty (acura care I think it's called). I don't think you can get back your money ...or can you ..or maybe at least get back part by negotiating it into something else ....:8:

I agree with what the others said. The X absolutely does not need undercoating.

I really don't know if there are any cars today that need this treatment. The idea behind undercoating is to provide a barrier against moisture. But over time, the coating can chip away due to stone and gravel impact, and now you have areas that can trap moisture instead. Furthermore, what are the chances the dealer can get into every metal area under the vehicle? And if they do, there are some areas that you do not want this stuff to get into like drain holes, bolt holes (eg for side steps or running boards).

A relative of mine used to be a manager for several car dealerships. One of the biggest ripoff he admitted to me was the undercoating / rustproofing program.

Since you are in Canada, I would look into this process if you are planning on keeping the vehicle for a long time.

I've seen the process on Speed on Dream Car Garage. I am the first guy to poo-poo aftermarket rustproofing, or protection of any kind. However, I have seen firsthand what 5 years of ungaraged, but well cared for, life did for my Pathfinder. THe car wasn't rusted, but it seemed like every single bracket and auxiliary piece was.

I am not sure how much this process was but it was amazing...sprayed into every crack and crevice, inside of doors, etc. It was serious.

Knowing how much salt you guys get up there, it may be worth looking into.

thank you for all your replies..

yes, now i admit i made mistake and wasted my money.. :-(
They did rustproof and undercoating in dealer before the car comes out..

My question is beside wasting money, will this make my car worst? like heavier so it consume more gas or more future problem.. because of rustproof and undergoating..

Let's say if dealer will give you this for free, would you take it? if you live in Canada?

thanks,
SK.
