Just another dumb quick questions but when to use the 1st and 2nd gears on my mdx...besides using it the with the VTM-4 button...

My question really is that when i go light offroad is it normal to put the mdx on 2nd gear while riding on dirt road or just leave it at d5..Can i cause any major damage driving it in this low-gear at a low speed ...

No damage driving in low gears at low speeds (or even higher speeds for that matter). 1st gear is probably overkill for everything except ascending/descending extremely steep hills, but second gear is fine for many scenarios.

Keep it in D5 unless you need lower gear or VTM lock to get unstuck. The MDX is smart enough to know what gear it should be in on a trail. It will also hold lower gears up and down hills with the Grade Logic control.
And don't scratch the paint!

Yeah the grade logic control works well on the road, but offroad I don't think it works well enough. It rarely kicks down gears when going downhill. It seems to work better going uphill.

To the original poster: Leave it in D5 if you're driving on relatively flat stuff, but if you get hills and you want to keep your speed down, absolutely gear down. I wouldn't hesitate to gear down to 1st gear on a steep hill. Although for most hills, second is fine. In first gear, I'd try and keep the speed under 15 mph or so.
