My X is complete... - Click HERE for Original Thread

Now that I've got the roof rails installed, that is...

I should've added them when I bought it, but the dealer was out of stock, and since it was summer and I didn't really need them at the time, I figured I'd wait until my first service appointment. As it so happens, a member on this board had a set that he was willing to hold onto for me, and I was all set to go that route, but fate intervened, and I wasn't able to head out his way to complete the deal. Well, with Christmas breathing down my neck, and no trees adoring my halls, I bit the bullet and had the dealer throw 'em this past week. Man, what a difference a couple of stupid metal rails make when transporting Christmas trees...

I don't know what it is, but IMO the X just doesn't look finished without them. In fact, I feel this way about most SUVs, save for the Range Rover (not sure why that is, maybe they're too refined for them  ). Yes, I know that Fab is going to chime in here with his "LEAN & MEAN :1: :1:    rigamorole, and trust me, I understand that everyone's entitled to their opinion. However, for this cat, his X is finally ready for her closeup.

So, in closing: Side steps for the young 'uns (and because they look butch), side body moldings for parking lots (nope, they don't help much, but I like how they look), tow hitch w/bike rack for the bikes, and all weather mats for snow/slush/mud/baby crap. I'll probably wind up ordering a cargo liner and cargo cover from Tim at some point, but otherwise, I'm done.

Regards,
Adam

PS - I won't be adding the crossbars since I won't need them. The bikes ride on the tow hitch, and I don't ski/surf/snowboard/camp, so I don't need to attach anything to rails, other than the three Christmas trees my family runs through each year.
Fabvsix
AS long as you are happy, I'm happy.....Merry Christmas for all the goodies....
You know how anal I am? So why stress out keeping brats off the sport running boards ? The door trim protectors (yeah right) don't protect from A$$wipes who intentionally or carelessly open their doors against your vehicle and thirdly I've NEVER used the roof racks in any of my previous or current vehicles, SO why bother with the additional noise and weight? ;)
craniotes
You're speaking the gospel truth about the body side moldings. While I do feel that they do a good job of breaking up the slab sides, they don't do squat when a soccer mom in a Denali parks six inches away from you with the entire team in tow. As for the rest of the crap, I'd still add it all, even if I didn't have to deal with kids and Christmas trees. I guess I just have this stereotypical view of what a SUV is supposed to look like, and side steps and roof racks go part and parcel with this preconceived notion of mine. Heck, I even like the tow hitch, never mind that the only thing I'll ever tow is my bike rack.

Oh, and FWIW, the rails alone don't seem add any wind noise -- perhaps it's the crossbars that are to blame. As for how much they weigh, I couldn't tell you, but they sure are solid suckers.

Regards,
Adam

PS - Is it just me, or is something up with attaching photos? I tries posting a shot, but it didn't go through.
Fabvsix
keep trying. My DSL was down most of yesterday and then down and up for the remainder......

I'll give it another go tonight, when I get home from work. I'm not sure why it was giving me trouble, but it must've been my connection because I couldn't post to Photobucket either.

That's why I only park beside Mini Coopers. This is the only time my BSM becomes functional. :D

Just curious, but what did you pay to purchase them from the dealer after you bought the MDX? I know what Tim charges, but I would want it installed by a dealer. My dealer charged me TIm's price for the side body molding plus $100 labor, when I recently purchased the MDX, but that was rolled into the total purchase price.

What are others paying for the roof rails, including labor?

Purchased & installed by dealer:

1. Roof rails
2. Cross bars
3. Sport running board
4. Cargo cover
5. Cargo net
6. Wood grain steering wheel

Total = $2,800 OTD

I definitely got bent over a rail by the dealer (stealer), but I was left with no choice since I needed them up by this past weekend for tree duty. I got them down to $200 for the rails, and $100 labor, but only because I pointed out that they didn't have them in stock when I bought my X, at which time I most certainly would've gotten a better deal commensurate with the other accessories I had installed. Otherwise, the robbers wanted $240 for the damn things -- which is $20 more than MSRP -- and $140 for installation (plus tax, naturally). Hey, this is Manhattan, after all.

If your dealer is willing to match Tim's price, I say go for it. As for the cross bars, if you need those too, order them and put 'em on yourself.

Adam

I should've seen this coming... ;) Yes, the sport running boards seem to be the favorites 'round these parts, and I seriously considered going that route, but to my eyes the side steps add a touch of ruggedness that's otherwise missing.

Differn't strokes for differn't folks, right?

Regards,
Adam

PS - And no, LS, I'm not a rare Asian redneck, though I am a bit everything else: Greek, African-American, Native American, and Irish). Mind you, my son is all that, and Chinese, so maybe he can fill that bill... ;)

All right now. I'm going to have to stand with a fellow chrome side stepper. Nothing redneckish about them. They are wide enough to be actually usable and heck, they even add a bit of chrome bling to the X.

By the way, how did you NOT get snow on the thread of your tires? Silver really camouflages the salt. Here's my salt encrusted formal black.
Fabvsix
oh hell no! I'd never live in snow country. That is tore up man!
HuMan321
OMG :o
After seeing that it makes me happy they don't use salt in Idaho

Tim is the go-to guy at hondacuraworld, the official accessories and parts pusher here. You could say he's the pimp, coz he can pimp your ride (well, maybe that's going overboard).:D

Damn! I hope not. Looks like someone's rear end brushed up against the side.

My blind spot is also getting worst. My rear window is reduced to a semi-circle.

Eujinc, you'd best go and post your shots in the dirty X thread.

As for my tires in the original photo, the reason that there's no snow in the treads is simple: it was in the garage overnight, and by the time I rolled it out for this shot the snow on the ground had frozen. What you don't see is me getting stuck in my Benz, which I left outside and put back in the garage. It took me about 20 minutes of back and forth (with a little rock salt thrown in for good measure) to coax it back into its nest. The X, on the other hand, couldn't have cared less about the ice (this also goes for the remainder of my driveway, which is about 1/10th of mile long and has a 15% grade).

Adam
