Hello we have a 03 MDX with 125K. Amazing car. My wife drives daily on the Highways in Colorado. My question, recently the check engine light came on and the VST-4 light has come on (doesn't blink). Car appears to run fine. What should I do? Also, we have never changed the Timing Belt. When we start the SUV on a cold day it sounds like we have a loose chain but this goes away within one second after start up. All of the lighting problems (check engine and VST-4) started within the last week when it got down to 7F.
Thank you--David S. |

You need to take your vehicle to a repair shop to have it diagnosed.
Timing belt should have nothing to do with it.
If you have 125k, you might want to have the t-belt replaced soon if not done at 90k-100k |

It's something in your transmission I think. If the check engine at VTM-4 light go on, it means something is wrong in the tranny or rear differential. Get it diagnosed. |

| Thanks for the information. I will take into a shop to see what they think. |

..There has been some consideration given by Honda/Acura toward tranny replacements, even at your high mileage. Have an Acura dealer diagnose the problem and, if the tranny, get Acura involved. If they aren't involved bring your checkbook. Trannys run $3500-4K.
Please let us know what happens. |

If you have had the 106k (?) service the light may just have come on due to the EGR valve sticking. Does it hesitate when accelerating when cold? This happened a few times to me and they replaced the EGR valve, (I think). Seems to be a common problem especially inthe cold. Recall on this item for the older MDX's, I hear still a problem for the younger ones as well. It will make both the Check engine and VTM light come on. I ignored it and they went out a week later when things warmed up and with some highway driving. Of course the safest course of action is to get it diagnosed by a dealer.
If you are 125K and over due for the major service, get'er done. |

So, I think everyone who has replied will find this interesting...
I took the 03 MDX to a local repair shop, they said that is needs a new sensor that regulates the air fuel mixture, cost: $220. According to them, this will shut off both Dashboard lights. They want $1020 for a new timing chain and water pump! I called the local Honda Dealer and there price is $560 for the same items! The local shop said it needs new rear brakes, cost $220.
So, I will fix the sensor at the local shop and drive the car to the Honda Dealer to get the Timing Chain and Water Pump for $560.
I will also get an estimate for the brakes.
I am amazed the Honda Dealer is almost 1/2 of the local shop!
How much should rear brakes run me?
I will keep you posted.... |

| If the rear brake job includes rotor resurfacing, that's probably close to an accurate price. |
