| Any one know what's the widest tire size can fit on a 18" sport rim safely? I'm thinking about going with 285/50/18 from Conti CrossContact. Wonder if its safe to do so or not? |

| Just putting this out there a lot of continentals are crap ...sorry but they are only good for about 15k miles. I have a lot of them come on vehicles and then at 15k like a charm they start making road noise or wobbling ...up till 15k they are great tires ..but I would think you would want more out of a tire when paying that much money. And I've seen a range of contis do this same thing from nissan ...infiniti ....lincoln ... bmw etc. ...so you might want to choose something other than contis :8: |

What's the point? According to DiscountTire.com, the widest Plus-0 size is 245/60/18. You are definitely stretching the tire and risking tire failure at 285 width. |

Won't the 285 make our tires look like BALLOONS?

I doubt it will and I hope it won't. Its just about 1 inch wider. The overall diameter is almost identical per tire size calculation. I just want it to get more grip with meaner look from the rear end. :) |

That's why I want to make sure it safe before I do so. Can't afford to risk my life anymore to look good since there are 3 other mouths waiting to be feed on my 1 miserable income. |

Hmmm...not to be harsh, then don't you think your income would better served for feeding those 3 mouths than to waste money on wider tires that really won't make much of difference in day-to-day driving conditions? |

Good point. I'm just researching my alternative before when I need to replace my existing tires. So, there may be a good whole year to go before this change when its necessary. I just want to plan ahead and shop for the best and cheapest replacement. |

Go to the Tire Rack web site and research the various tires. While I am a big fan of Discount Tire, the Tire Rack website has far more information available for research purposes,so do your research there. keep in mind that tire dimensions are like shoe sizes--they vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. The stock tire is a 255/55/18 and has the following approximate dimensions: 28.9" diameter, 8.7" tread width, and requires a rim width between 7 to 9 inches. The stock rim is 8 inches wide. If you want a wider tire consider the 285/50/18 which has the following approximate dimensions: 29.2" diameter, 9.7" tread width and requires a rim 8 to 10 inches wide.
Compare price and selection keeping in mind there is really nothing to be gained with a wider tire other than aesthetics.
As for the safety issue, this is a question of varying opinion and ultimately you have to decide what is safe. As long as there are no clearance issues with wider tire, there should not be any issues. |
