What types of jacks do you guys use to get the front and rear off the ground? 2.5 tons, 3 tons, 4 tons? Got my eye on the 3 ton jack, stand and creeper set from Sears for 100 bucks but not sure if that will lift the X high enough to slip the stands under.

I use a 3-ton SUV jack from Sears. If it can get the 1st gen off the ground, I would think it would do fine with the lower 2nd gen.

I have 1-1/2 ton and 3 ton jacks, and heavy duty jack stands.

But I don't use them very often.

I use a 30 year old set of heavy duty ramps, which I find much more convenient, quicker, and probably safer.

I would not recommend the one piece stamped steel ramps, as I think that they are too light duty.

Or, you could make your own with 5 - 2x10's, stacked on top of each other, tapering on one end, with 45 degree cuts on the tapered ends of the boards, but they are heavy.

IMO, those sets from Sears are cheapie. I too looked into a set of stands and jack from Sears for around $100. However, the jack is lightweight looking (despite what the capacity says) and didn't have enough lift, I though. The stands looked weak.

I bought their "SUV" jack which has a 4.5 ton capacity and is much beefier. Those together with 3.5 ton jack stands was less than $180 on sale.

I'm going to be crawling around under there, not worth my neck to save $80.

The jack lifts the truck well, and is low enough to fit under the front end of my lowered V70R (about 4.5" of clearance).

By "SUV" jack, do you mean jacks with 3+ ton capacity? The ramp idea, unfortunately, will not work for me due to space limitation.

The 3 ton combo I mentioned seemed to get pretty good reviews compared to the other jacks from the Sears site. I'll have to go see for myself.

Here's a hypothetical question: Can a pair of 2 1/4 ton stands be used for the MDX? 2 1/4 tons = 4500 lbs, and the X will exceed the limit by 100 lbs or so. However, since we are only dealing with one end (the other end on the ground or up on a second set of stands), 2 1/4 tons should be sufficient, right?

I have been successfully using (1) Arcan 3 1/2 ton floor jack and (4) Arcan 6 ton jack stands for all the maintainence on my MDX. I bought my equipment from Costco. I find it is best and safest to use all four jack stands to lift the MDX completely off the ground. Oil, VTM, and ATF changes, as well as tire rotations are a snap.:29:

I'll have to check Costco too. That's the idea I have as well on getting it off the ground for the work you just mentioned as well as doing any brake jobs. Jacking this beast up 4 times or so is quite a chore.

Not to hijack the thread, but what jacking points is everyone using? Are there any points that are acceptable for jacking the front at one time and the rear at one time? How about jackstand points?

Thanks!

(Can't wait for Christmas to get my shop manual!!!)

On my '02 there is a loop under the front of the car, and in the back there is a lift point near the VTM unit. There is a thread on here with pics if you want to do a search. I then place the jack stands at each of the 4 lift point that normally would be used with the OEM jack, 2 on each side of the vehicle.
