dial from cell phone? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Is it just my phone (700p from verizon) or does the HFL system not allow you to make a call from the cell phone and have it be on speakerphone?

Sometimes it just easier dialing from the phone.. Mine initially comes up with "cancel headphone" icon but then it goes away.. I find myself not using the HFL as much as I think I would because the integration isn't all the good with my phone.. Don't get me wrong its likely better then most, but it still isn't as perfect as I would like it.

Anyone?

I have a Verizon 700p as well. In order to make a call I dial it through my Treo, and then hit the HFL button on the steering wheel and say, "transfer", which ports the call through the HFL. Trust me, I wish I could download the phone book, but this method works well enough.

Thanks! I didn't know that I'll have to give it a try. I actually bought another phone on ebay to DL the phone book... still sometimes easier to dial from phone though.

Now that I have been using the HFL for close to two months, I feel like I can offer some valid comparisons vs. the Motorola IHF-1000 systems that I have in my Volvo and had in my Pathfinder.

HFL, being fully integrated, has the edge of course. Controls on steering wheel instead of on a stand alone pod on the dash is a bit nicer. Display of caller ID in the MID is excellent, as is the huge phone book in the Nav display (that is, if I can find a phone that will transfer the info! T68i on order, so hopefully that will work).

I would say that the IHF has some features that are as equal or nicer than the HFL. Both have voice dial-by-number. Both have a smallish voice dial phonebook. HFL can upload directly from the phone to that phonebook, but the process is somewhat tedious.

The IHF has the edge in the voice commands, though. I hate having to hit the HFL button every time you need a voice command said. The IHF only requires one press, and then will expect you to speak when appropriate instead of having to continually press the button each time you need to input.

IHF also has the edge on in and out of the car transfers, and dialing from the phone. When getting in the car and starting it, the call will automatically be transferred over to the hands free. When turning the car off, it will be transferred back to the handset. One does not have to say “transfer” and have the caller wonder what the hell you’re talking about. If you want to transfer while the car is still on, as if for privacy, you simply press and hold the call button on the IHF. No need to look like a dork yelling “transfer” while driving. Also, calls made directly from the handset automatically activate the hands free. Nice when you want to dial from your cell’s contact list. Again, no need for the separate “transfer” rigamarole.

All in all, the HFL is definitely slicker, and will become much more functional when the Nav display phonebook actually works. But I was surprised that it didn’t blow away my Motorola system as badly as I thought.

I fully agree Needsdecaf - the "Transfer" is very embarassing, especially when it is a business call and it does not connect immediately.

I have even had it NOT TRANSFER sometimes and it sounds like a hang up at the other end.

Even simple BT devices enable calling directly out of the cell's
phonebook.

The extra step and exact timing of seeing the pick-up at the other end and then doing the Dorky "Transfer" call is IMPORTANT.

Actually, this can all be corrected by Acura with TSB firmware updates, as the cars go for services. These are minor software tweaks as I understand it.

This is the software issue which can easily be adjusted & improved. How did they pass QC in the first place, that's what I'm wondering.

Acura/software engineers, are you getting all this?

Try muting your cell phone before saying "Transfer".

I was actually on a conference call yesterday and when I got in the X, the HFL responded to the transfer command by saying my phone is in use. I tried again but this time I waited a second or so before saying transfer and it worked.

A transfer button might be handy. But a Mute/Pause button to mute the call and pause the CD would be nicer.

So ! One more step to mute and especially on a touchpad phone like and I-Phone or Cingular HTCs it is a BIG HASSLE!

Yes an Acura provided TRANSFER solution with a screen button is best solution and can be done with easy TSB firmware updates.

I programmed my numbers with voice commands into the Acura system: no phone book download. I make calls all the time without ever touching the phone. Sometimes it takes a try or two for it to find the right entry but I find that problem with every voice recognition software I have ever used. Fortunately, it asks before it actually places the call.

I've been making out just fine with the "transfer" method, though I agree that a dedicated button would make this process even simpler. However, given that I don't use my X as a mobile office, I'll probably sit down with it sometime over the long weekend and program in my most used numbers (wife's cell, home, mother, office, sister...), and call it a day. I'd go the SIM card route, but since I'm with Verizon and they don't use GSM, I'm SOL in this regard.

You should be able to transfer your contacts from your Verizon phone to a computer, then to the T68i, i would think. Once I get the phone, I'll try with my wife's Verizon Razr to see if we can get her phonebook in as well.

Can you do multiple phone books? Never looked at that...

This is true, however it would be too much of a PITA for it to be worth it. First, I would need to secure a T68i, then I would need to find a data cable, and finally, I would need to make sure that I have the proper software to transfer my contacts from my MacBook Pro's Address Book to the T68. Given that there are only ten numbers at the most that I call regularly from the car, I'm okay with manually programming the damn thing. Yes, I still think it's pants that my phone, and 99% of the rest of the phones on the market are incompatible with the phone book transfer function, but I'll live.

Sounds like another reason to get an iPhone!

With my iPhone, whenever I use the phone, these soft buttons come up, allowing me to quickly select the source.. bluetooth, speaker phone, or normal phone.

Easy phonebook transfer as well :)
